LOCKARD, Emma
November 18/1919 – September 7/2022
After an amazing 102 years, our remarkable mother’s life has come to an end. Emma was born at Arelee, Saskatchewan November 18/1919. She was the 3rd of ten children born to George and Vera Prehodchenko: Peter, Ruby, Emma, Walter, Diane, Eva, Esther, Marie, Ed and Helene. When Emma was 13, her young mother was deathly ill, and Emma made a promise to her on her deathbed, that she would care for all her younger siblings. Her teenage years were spent working on the family farm and helping to raise her brothers and sisters. Emma came to the Niagara area during the war. She worked at McKinnon Industries and Lightening Fastener. After the war, she was employed by the Bright family at Willowbank in Queenston as a nanny. She met Gord Lockard and they were married the same day as Queen Elizabeth, on November 20, 1947. Emma made everyone feel welcome and comfortable in her home, a boulder stone house, hand built by her father-in-law. Whether it was Jim’s teenaged buddies coming for a midnight snack after a few drinks, or a large family holiday dinner, she had a talent for putting tasty food on the table. Last minute baby sitting was always available. The grandkids enjoyed cracked ice on a hot day, pudding cups and wagon wheels from the snack cupboard, and Melba toast with butter and honey. Her table always had bowls of “treats” and fortune cookies. Granny’s “library” included a huge stash of Harlequin romance novels and no returns necessary. Emma and Gord enjoyed many trips, to Western Canada, New York, and New Jersey. Her favourite destination was Las Vegas. They visited the Hoover Dam, the Grand Canyon and of course Emma loved those slot machines. An annual trip to the CNE and weekly Sunday family picnics to Lakeside Park were summer highlights. Emma enjoyed entering contests and won quite a few prizes from the local radio stations. After Gord passed away in 2000, Emma stayed on the farm independently until she was 91. She then moved to Cavendish Manor retirement home. At age 96, she moved to Eventide home, a wonderful facility with dedicated caring staff. Sincere thanks to each and every person there. Emma is survived by her sister, Helene. Children: Jimmy (Sylvia) Lockard, Carol (Ted) Greves, Elizabeth (the late Rick) Guitard, Mary (Norman) Lumsden. Grandchildren: Erinn (James), Susan (Dan), Gord (Stacy), Kerri (Rob), Michelle (Dean), Ricky, Rachel (Daryl), Adam (Mandy), and Emily (Andrew). Great grandchildren: Stephanie, Liam, Sophie, Daphne, Skyler, Kelton, Cody, Leon, Fletcher, Emma, Mya, Ieleen, and Josephine. And Great great grandchild: Jason.
A private family graveside service will be held on Monday, September 12, 2022 at Warner Cemetery, with the Major Renee Clarke officiating.
