Obituary
ELIZABETH (BETTY) CHARLOTTE SAUNDERS
(nee ANDERSON)
Peacefully, on Friday May 27th, 2022, at Calvary Place in Winnipeg, Betty passed away at 83 years of age.
She is lovingly remembered by her husband of 56 years, Roger; children Michael (Darcelle), Megan
(Michael), Kyle (Krista); grandsons Brett (Catherine), Garrett, Malcolm; great-granddaughter Sophia; as
well as her siblings Garry (Dorothy), Harvey (Nancy), Terry (Doug), and many nieces, nephews, cousins,
and friends.
She was predeceased by her parents Jack and Mayme Anderson, her brother Robert, and her nephews,
Dean and Shawn Anderson.
Betty was born in Kindersley, Saskatchewan on January 15th, 1939. She was raised on the family farm in
Marengo, in a close-knit farming community surrounded by many friends and neighbours.
She attended high school at the Sisters of St. Joseph Convent in Rosetown. She completed her training at
St. Paul’s Hospital School of Nursing in Saskatoon and graduated with her RN in 1960. Betty made
lifelong friends from her time in nursing school and enjoyed their many class reunions over the years.
After graduation she worked in various places in Western Canada before coming to Winnipeg to work in
the maternity ward of St. Boniface Hospital. She truly enjoyed this time in her life; she shared an
apartment with good friends and had a busy social life. It was at a party hosted by mutual friends that
Betty met Roger in the fall of 1964. They were married the following summer in a torrential downpour in
Marengo, Saskatchewan. Roger and Betty made their home in East Selkirk, and started their family.
Betty stayed home with her children until they entered school. She then returned to work, while
continuing to raise her family and supporting Roger on the farm. Eventually she found her place as a
Home Care nurse in and around Selkirk, a job that she held for almost 20 years until her retirement.
Betty had a number of hobbies through which she made many of her closest friends. She quilted,
painted porcelain, made pottery, knitted, and made crafts. Betty and Roger traveled often with their
children. After retirement, they could be found every winter, enjoying the company of friends during
“Happy Hour” at Loma Linda in Guayabitos, Mexico.
Betty found so much joy in her grandchildren, and was always available to spend time with them. She
loved most having her family gathered around her. She is remembered as a good listener and friend,
someone who loved to laugh, and who, when asked, could give thoughtful advice.
Betty spent the last year of her long, full life at Calvary Place Personal Care Home in Winnipeg, where her
cheerfulness and kindness endeared her to fellow residents and to the wonderful staff.
Prayers will take place at Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk on Wednesday June 1st, 2022 at 7:00 p.m.
Funeral mass will be held Thursday, June 2nd at 11:00 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church, East
Selkirk. Condolences may be shared on Betty’s memorial page at www.gilbartfuneralhome.com.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish may donate to St. Boniface Hospital, Winnipeg where Betty worked,
had her children, and received excellent treatment from the staff of CancerCare.
