It is with great sadness that we, the family of Elizabeth “Betty” MacDonald, announce her passing on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, at the age of 89.
Born in Baddeck, N.S. on May 23, 1932, she was the oldest of three children born to the late Daniel and Gertrude MacDonald.
Betty lived in Big Baddeck until she found employment with Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Smith, who she remained with until she retired. After retirement, she moved to Sydney with her younger sister, Patsy, where they enjoyed being two peas in a pod for several years. After Patsy’s passing, Betty’s strong character allowed her to remain and live independently into her final days.
Betty lived life to the fullest, enjoying cross-country skiing, walking, travelling, reading and attending the Nova Scotia International Tattoo on several occasions, which she enjoyed immensely and brought her great joy. She loved chatting with and spending time with her family and friends.
Betty was always good for a laugh, had a big heart, and her witty sarcasm was unmatched. You rarely saw her without her jewelry on, and she always took great pride and care in her appearance.
She was predeceased by her parents, Daniel and Gertrude MacDonald; sister, Patricia “Patsy” MacPhail; and brother-in-law, Barry MacPhail.
She will be greatly missed by her brother, Kitchener (Carole) MacDonald; nieces, Charlene MacPhail and Carrie MacDonald; nephews, Rob MacPhail, Barry MacPhail, Jamie MacPhail, and Robbie MacDonald; and her great-nieces and great-nephews.
There will be no visitation, as per Betty’s wishes. Arrangements have been entrusted to Sydney Memorial Chapel for cremation and burial, which will take place at a later date.
The family would like to thank the Smith and Young families for their kindness to Betty throughout the years. We would also like to thank Sharon MacNeil, her good friend and neighbour, for being there for her through the last few years, and for taking in her best friend and furry cat companion, Jake. A special thank you to the staff of ICU and the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for all their compassion and care during Betty’s stay. To say we appreciate you would be an understatement.
