Obituary of Edwina Ann “Winnie” Dykens
EDWINA ANN (WINNIE) DYKENS (FITT)
Our little village in Westville is heartbroken to announce the peaceful passing of our Mama and Nanny, Winnie, in the early morning hours of March 14th 2022, at the age of 79.
Mama was born August 13th 1942 to Edward and Sarah (Hurley) Fitt.
Mama is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 56 years, Baker; her children Heather (Hughie) Smith, Baker Jr. (Anita) and Alice (Stephen) MacDonald. Also survived by the light and joy of her life, granddaughter Erin “Babes” (Jordan) Anderson, youngest granddaughter Emily, and step-grandsons Aaron and Adam.
Mama had the love and support of her sisters Theresa Fitt, Sally (Art) Brennan, Joan (Percy) Pellerine, Rita Fitt, Cathy (Allison) Ross and her bothers Pat (Noreen) Fitt and Art (Joanne) Fitt. Also survived by sister-in-law and friend Leona Fitt, everyone who loved her over on The Hill and brother-in-law Dan MacIntosh. Mama had many nieces, nephews and cousins who loved her dearly.
Besides her parents, Mama was predeceased by her son Michael (infancy), brother John (infancy), brother Neddie Fitt and sister Alice MacIntosh.
As a young woman Mama worked at the Aberdeen hospital but when she met the love of her life, she became a full time stay at home wife & mother and was quite content to be. Later in life she became a compassionate care giver to numerous people in Pictou County, working alongside her sister Theresa most of the time, “The Caregiver Dream Team”.
Mama’s world revolved around her children, husband and grand babies. She always had hugs and an “I Love You” when you visited. She was famous for her turkey dinners with her own stuffing and her beautiful gravy. Heaven help you though if you left the spoon in!
Mama loved to receive greeting cards, “I love my cards”. She always said we could give her a car and she would still look for the card to go with it. Mama was also famous for her Saturday night baths. Her kids and whoever else was sleeping over were the cleanest kids in town after she was done scrubbing them!
Mama and dad were no travellers but they enjoyed going for drives, going to Lower Sackville to visit her daughter and son-in-law and visiting her favourite little ones over on the hill.
Mama was the strongest woman we knew. She went through so much in her last two years and fought with everything she had. Even after two surgeries for lung cancer and other health issues she was feisty and her stubborn self, right up to the end.
Cremation has taken place.
No visitation or funeral service by request.
