Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Edwina Gregory “Winnie” (Nordstrom) Hughes at Kingsway Care Center on July 2, 2022, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Saint John, on April 25, 1928, to the late Charles and Violet (Lobb) Nordstrom and was the loving wife to her late husband, Scott Hughes.
Winnie was a born caretaker. She left school early to work in a bakery, a pharmacy and later as a cashier in a grocery store to help out her family. If there was a contest for the best grocery packer, Winnie would have been judged by the number of people who wanted to be in her lineup to pack their groceries. For what she lacked in formal education, she gained a wealth of gifts and strengths throughout her life. She was blessed with two daughters and was very involved in their lives. Winnie was always very active and loved to garden, bake, knit and she was also a champion bowler. She liked to dance, and watch harness racing, and “Wanna Win Winnie” loved to play BINGO. She lived in Saint John, Montreal, Toronto, Moncton and Rothesay over the years. Over time, Winnie started to take boarders into her home and it was through this process that she met and eventually married Scott Hughes, who was the love of her life. While living in Moncton for most of this time, they opened their home to several students over the years from NBCC Moncton to reside there during their studies. The waiting list for accommodation was not at community college, it was at Winnie Hughes’ Home. They always had a long list of those who wanted to stay with Winnie. She was a favorite with the school and students alike. When she became a grandmother, it was like the light grew even brighter in her ability to love and care and she was the best grandmother. Winnie eventually moved to Rothesay to be close to her family and after Scott passed away, she lived with her daughter Debbie, Glenn and their family. She was a member of the Kennebecasis Valley Seniors Club and enjoyed the many various outings and activities she did with them. She has resided in Kingsway Care Center for the last 6 years and was a very enjoyed and loved resident there. What a wonderful world it was with Winnie in it. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her daughters, Debbie (Glenn) Hurley and Lynn Lawson; 6 grandchildren, Jillian (Colin) Ring, Mark (Alicia Scott ) Lawson, Brent (Terilyn) Lawson, Lindsay (Drew) Carleton, Courtney (Randy) Hanley and Jeremy (Jacqueline Lorkowska) Hurley; 10 great grandchildren, Madeline, Mya, Max, Luke, Amelia, Jude, Libby, Jax, Sloane and Parker; her brothers, James and Gerald (Marilyn); her sister, Barbara McNeil and sister-in-law, Yvonne Nordstrom; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and so very many friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her brother, Sonny Nordstrom; her son-in-law, David Lawson; her brother-in-law, Alan “Bing” McNeil and sister-in-law, Margaret Nordstrom. She will rejoin in heaven her beloved furry friends, Gizmo, Jr “Bug”, Coby and Riley who brought so much unconditional love and joy to her life.
Arrangements are entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424) where visitation will take place on Tuesday from 2-4 & 6-8pm. A funeral service will be held from the Fundy Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, at 1pm with interment to follow in Fernhill Cemetery.
