The family of Edwin DeYoung are sad to announce his passing at home on June 30, 2022, after a courageous battle with cancer. Edwin was born in Eastern Passage to parents Stanley and Gladys (Naugle) on February 13, 1932. Predeceased by his parents, his first wife Patricia, (Walsh) second wife Donna (Linehan) (Rogers) siblings, Viola, Hattie Morrison, Edgar, Ross, and Norma Lavigne. Edwin is survived by sister, Helena Sullivan, sister-in law Kay Naugle, son Michael (Charmaine) daughter Elizabeth, son Daniel and daughter Patricia (William) Darroch. Grandchildren Kyle, Brittany, Carter, Gregory. Christopher, Michael, Daniel, Alexander, and Abigail. Great grandchildren Nathan, Winston, and Christopher. A lifelong resident of Eastern Passage who had a love for sports, participating in baseball, softball, and hockey. He also appreciated the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing in his younger years. He had a special affection for dogs as he trained many over the years including his most recent Maggie. He was very proud of his Eastern Passage heritage and became very active in the community. He was a Charter Member Buffalo Club Eastern Lodge 8686. In the early 1960’s realizing that very little opportunity for recreation existed in the community he with a small group of others started the Eastern Passage Athletic Association. This group provided opportunity for youth in the community to participate in hockey, baseball, and swimming. As President of the association, they were able to upgrade the fields and provide opportunities that would not have otherwise existed. With four children in school Edwin became active in the education system as a school trustee. As a long-time President of the Ratepayers Association, they advocated for many community improvements and were instrumental in getting a Junior High School built in Eastern Passage. They also started the first community school in the area as well as summer youth programs. Edwin’s fingerprints are on so many other community programs including the Summer Carnival, The Benevolent Society, Christmas Gift Program, the Beacon Community Newspaper, the Terry Fox Run and the Blood Donor Clinics. Edwin was also very active in the Eastern Passage Lions Club. As a forty-year member and long-time treasurer he assisted the club in many communities-based initiatives. As a life time member he received the Mel Jones Award and Lion of the Year awards as well as the Citizen of the Year. Edwin’s had a thirty-two-year career at the imperial Oil Refinery in Woodside. Retiring at a young fifty-five, Edwin and Patricia traveled and enjoyed a very active retirement life. The Blue Jays and the Leafs were their teams, and many Marches were spent in Florida following spring training. He was a man of very strong faith. As a parishioner of at St Andrews Catholic Church he served on the parish council for many years and became an alter server very late in life. Church and faith were extremely important as he regularly attended mass and was very involved in the Knights of Columbus. The family would like to thank the Capital Health Palliative Care Team, the Homecare team at Northwood as well as the VON who made Edwin’s last few weeks at home more comfortable. We would also like to recognize his special neighbours who were always looking out for him and to the regular Friday night group, a big thank you for your companionship and compassion.
