Edward’s Obituary
Today, as we say goodbye and honor the life of an admirable husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, we will hold memories of stories and his love in our hearts. On Saturday, March 19th , 2022, with family at his side, Edward Benedict Smith passed away at the Dr. Charles L. LeGrow Health Centre, Port aux Basques, at the age of 82 years.
Born in Millville, Newfoundland, Edward was the son of the late Benedict and Annie Smith and the son-in-law to the late Timothy and Isobelle Brennan. He was predeceased by sisters and brothers; Baby Geraldine Smith, Margret Sheppard, Marie Downey, Joseph Smith, Gerard Smith, Vincent Smith and Allan Smith.
Left to carry on Edward’s memory, fondness, and love for life is Gladys his loving and dedicated wife of 56 years. His four daughters; Chris(Brian) Quigley of Petawawa Ont., Elizabeth Smith (Peter) of Pasadena NL, Kimberly (Troy) Skinner of Ottawa Ont. Paula (Richard) Smith-Wall of Ottawa Ont., as well as his two granddaughters; Jessica and Samantha Wall. Edward also leaves behind his sisters Bridget Downey, Jean (Eddie) Henry, Rita MacIssac, Matilda Ryan, and his brother Jerome (Petrina) Smith and he will be missed by his four legged friends Doc and Maggie.
Edward leaves behind a large circle of extended family and friends that will also have fond memories of the gentle giant that he was. Edward, affectionately called “Skipper”, was known for his love of a good game of crib or scat. He could always be found working at his impressive woodpile. He sure loved to cut wood. He could tell a good story about moose hunting, seal hunting, fishing and working in Gallants. We always knew from the glimmer in his eye that a good joke was coming. Dare to try to get him off the dance floor at the senior’s club on a Saturday night. It would only ever be his grand-babies to encourage and convince him to dress up for Halloween, just so he could see them smile at “poppy”. He made sure that no one ever left the dinner table hungry. He taught his girls “if anything was worth doing, it was worth doing right”. He always said leave things better than you found them. He worked hard and would be there in a heartbeat if you needed him. It was nothing short of a blessing to be able to call this man our provider. We were truly blessed to have him in our lives and he will forever be remembered with love.
In honoring and respecting Edward’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no funeral services will be held. If you wish to celebrate Edward’s life please feel free to donate to the Codroy Valley Fire Department in his memory.
The family of Edward wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at the Dr. Charles L LeGrow Hospital and the East Haven Funeral Home in Port aux Basques.
Funeral arrangements were in the care of East Haven Funeral Home Inc, 57 Grand Bay Road, Port aux Basques, NL. info@easthavenfuneralhome.com (709)-695-2300 www.easthavenfuneralhome.com
