It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our beloved Mother and Grandma. Edith passed away at Cedarcroft Retirement Home with family by her side on July 29th in her 95th year.
The youngest and last survivor of nine children, Edith was born in Auburn, Ontario on December 11, 1927 to Rev. George Lorenz Gross and Sarah Amanda Durst. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 71 years, Stan Schneider in December 2020, and will be deeply missed by her daughters and their families: Susan (Terry) Flynn, Galen, Kaylie (Edgar); Linda (Erik) Vaartnou, Tiiu; Jennifer (Mark) Zornes, Levi; and Nancy (Louis) Eckert, Khonrad and Anneleis. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Kathleen Riehl and Betty Gross and by many nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by sisters Gladys (William) Ropp, Esther (Russell) Karges, Viola (Ken) Schneider, Violet (Jack) Koch, Clara (Archie) Jones, Dorothy (Ralph) Zurbrigg and brothers Elmer (Hilda) Gross and Gordon Gross. Edith will be missed by the entire extended Schneider and Gross families and many friends and neighbours in the Stratford – Sebringville area.
A woman full of love, kindness, generosity, grace and strength, and possessed of a wonderful sense of fun, Edith was everything a mother should be – caregiver, cheerleader, role model, advisor and mender of everything from ripped jeans to broken hearts. She also made significant contributions throughout her life to her community. At Emmanuel United Church in Sebringville, she sang in the choir for decades, served as both president and secretary of the UCW and with Stan, was an active member of the Homebuilders’ Club for over fifty years. She was a member of the Sebringville Women’s Institute for more than twenty years, serving as secretary for seventeen of them. She also volunteered with the Sebringville Athletic Association and was a long-time member of the Eastern Star. Over the years, she applied her solid work ethic and secretarial and bookkeeping skills to several local companies and the post office and especially to the family business, Schneider’s General Store. But her proudest accomplishment and deepest love and commitment were to her family. Go in peace and with our love.
Interment has taken place at Sebringville Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the W.G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron Street, Stratford on Friday, August 12, from 1 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 2 p.m.
In memory of Edith, donations may be made to Kids Help Phone, Operation Smile or the charity of your choice through the funeral home. 519.271.7411 www.wgyoungfuneralhome.com
