EDGAR KING MCLELLAN
MAY 14, 1925 – DECEMBER 27, 2022
Ed, a much-loved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, died peacefully on Tuesday December 27, 2022 at Canterbury Gardens at the age of 97. Predeceased by his loving wife, Libby (2018) and son, Hugh (1983). He is survived by his daughters, “his 3 angels”, Cheryl Rubin, Alison Armitage (Mel/Joe), and Christine Nicholls (Grant). He has left many wonderful memories for his 10 grandchildren – John Beatty (Emily), Jennifer Lee Shee, Michelle Johnston (Vaughan), Becky Waldman (Haze), Beth Armitage (Colin), Kate Marlow (Kurtis), Stephen Armitage (Jennie), Scott Armitage, Mike Nicholls (Julie) and Jeff Nicholls (Erin). His “Tales of the Green Forest” will be cherished by his 17 great-grandchildren. Ed was the second of four children born to Edward McLellan and Allie King. He grew up on the farm in Nova Scotia with his siblings Ruth Smith, Beth Baxter, and Bruce (2013). After high school, he worked for one year logging in the bush with his father. He attended Mount Allison University and Nova Scotia Technical College and graduated with a BSc in electrical engineering. He began his career with CGE in 1947 and married the love of his life, Libby, in 1949. They built a home in Kawartha Heights and raised 4 children, teaching them kindness, compassion and responsibility. They spent their summers at the cottage on Paudash Lake and driving to Nova Scotia to visit relatives. In 1971, Ed was transferred to Dominion Engineering in Montreal and returned to Peterborough in 1981. He retired from his management position at CGE in1986, bought a woodlot, and spent many years chopping and delivering firewood to family and friends. He and Libby led an active social life, involved in the church, theatre and bridge groups. They travelled extensively and enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren. His good friend, Marty, introduced him to the concept of Energy From Waste. Ed joined the Peterborough Men’s Group and shared his strong belief in this technology with them. For the next 35 years, he worked tirelessly to promote EFW in the hope that it would lead to a better environment for future generations. His 30 binders, filled with research and letters to politicians, are a testament to his perseverance. His other passion was his music. He enjoyed singing in the St. James United Church choir and playing his much-loved organ. He took great delight in performing concerts with his friend, Alex, and three daughters. He also recorded several CDs with the help of Barry. His music and voice will live on. Many thanks to Canterbury Gardens for their excellent care of our father. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held on January 14, 2023 from 2:00 – 4:00 pm at Highland Park Funeral Centre, 2510 Bensfort Rd., Peterborough.
