Dr. Alan R. Hebb
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Dad and Granddad, Dr. Alan Ralph Hebb, at Joseph Brant Hospital on Monday September 26, 2022. Alan is predeceased by the love of his life for 58 years, Louise Hebb (Smith) in 2019, granddaughter Robin in 1999, and parents, Ralph ‘Rad’ and Keltie Hebb (Holman). He is survived by his three children, Elizabeth (Greg), Derek (Denise) and Cameron (Kristina) and ten grandchildren, Diana, Alan, Shannon, David, Christopher, Brennan, Mathew, Spencer, Jack and Riley. Alan will be greatly missed by his brother, Will (Nancy), cousins, nieces and nephews, colleagues and his dear friends.
Alan cherished the time he spent with family, including summer vacations at the family home in Prince Edward Island, holiday celebrations, regular weekend field trips with his grandchildren and attending their various extracurricular activities.
Alan was born in Halifax in 1934 and graduated from Dalhousie Medical School in 1959. After a period as a family physician in Halifax, and after postgraduate training in internal medicine in Halifax and Toronto, Alan and his family moved to Burlington, Ontario in 1966 where he began a private practice as a specialist in Internal Medicine.
Positions held during his long career included: Head of the Department of Medicine at Joseph Brant Hospital; part-time Assistant Professor of Medicine at McMaster University, serving as a clinical teacher of medical students; and Assessor with the Peer Review Program of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. He also had extensive involvement with heart and stroke associations, diabetes clinics, and as a consultant at Maple Villa Long Term Care Centre.
Alan enjoyed training with Canada’s artillery and competitive rifle shooting during university. His other activities included Scouting, membership in Rotary International and Port Nelson United Church, commissaire with the Ontario Cycling Association, and as a Doping Control Officer with Canada Centre for Drug Free Sport. Alan was a deltiologist (postcard collector); in 2014, he wrote a book on his grandfather, W.E. Hebb, a Halifax businessman and postcard publisher from 1904 to 1914. Alan was an active member of the Golden Horseshoe and Toronto Postcard Clubs.
Visitations will be held at Port Nelson United Church, 3132 South Drive, Burlington on Friday October 7 from 1:30-3:30 pm and Saturday October 8 from 1:00-2:00 pm. A Celebration of Life will be held at Port Nelson on Saturday October 8 from 2:00-3:00 pm, followed by a reception.
In lieu of flowers a donation to a chosen charity could be considered.
We would like to thank the dedicated physicians and nurses who provided Alan with excellent care.
