On March 2nd 2022, we lost our true North Star and guide post in life. It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Dorothy Marie Nelson at the age of 74 years. Beloved companion and wife of Seward Lee Nelson for 58 years. Devoted mother of Lisa and son-in-law Chad Mansell. Precious grandmother of Addisyn and Kalen. Loving sister of the late Albert Larabee (Debbie), Stanley Larabee (Maureen), Millie Gibb (late Ronnie), Cindy Maher, Percy “Bud” Maher (Cindy). Dear sister-in-law of the late Melissa (Cook) Nelson, the late Gerald Nelson (late Sylvia), Marion Schofield (late Howard), Albert Nelson, the late Linda Wyer (Don), Cora Weir (Wendel), Sylvia Fischer, Lorne Nelson, the late Otis Nelson (Edith) and Darrell Nelson. Dorothy kept cherished memories of aunts, uncles and cousins. She will be missed by many adoring nieces and nephews and several loyal and lifelong friends.
Dorothy was a hardworking, determined and selfless spirit with a radiant heart that outshined the brightest of lights. She gave of herself tirelessly to ensure that her loved ones were always cared for and continued on this path throughout her entire life. She basked in the love of her family and cherished every minute she had with her loved ones. After the passing of her mother at an early age, she embraced the role of care taker striving protect and provide for her first loves – her five siblings – in her heart she always felt a special bond with each one of them. Dorothy was the most exceptional and inspirational mom and was always there for her daughter Lisa and son-in-law Chad in support of their life dreams – at every stage and step no matter when or where. Dorothy was the proudest grandmother and biggest fan of her grandbabies. She had a magical connection with them and they brought her true happiness. This could be seen every time she wrapped her arms around them and her entire being bubbled with laughter and joy.
Dorothy was a lover of country music. The song “Stand By Your Man” by Patsy Cline defined her long lasting and faithful relationship with Lee. Meeting her one true love and partner for life at sweet sixteen, her and Lee built a beautiful life together and were always and forever by each other’s side. During her younger years Dorothy would light up the dance floor especially to her country favorite George Jones. The song “I Don’t Need Your Rocking Chair” was her life motto and although her body aged over the years from hard work, and wear and tear, her feisty spirit kept her always young at heart.
She took tremendous pride in everything she did – big responsibilities like caring for her special sister Cindy throughout her lifetime. Even the smaller daily tasks of preparing the most delicious home cooked meals and meticulously caring for her home were all greeted with the same level of heartfelt presence and attention. Dorothy didn’t understand the word “shortcuts”. Dorothy’s role as a babysitter and crossing guard afforded her opportunities to connect with her local community and build meaningful and lasting friendships over her lifetime.
Dorothy cherished opportunities to explore many hobbies, in particular the ones that brought about personal connections. Her camping days were filled with many bonfires and chicken & rib dinners – the circle of friends and family always grew with her love and light. More recently, Dorothy soaked up simpler pleasures in life while curling up on her chair with a good book or completing a mindful word search to provide clarity and peace, as she continued to selflessly care for her husband Lee in his fight against Lewy Body Dementia.
With fierce unconditional love and determination, Dorothy was a champion for overcoming all obstacles in life, she was resilient and always found her way. Our true North Star has found her way into heaven and continues to guide us with her love – shine bright mama! We love you, we see you, we feel you!
We have such heartfelt gratitude to Kirk Fryer (Dorothy’s neighbor) who responded with special care in our time of need. We would also like to thank the entire Emergency Services Team for their professionalism and care.
If you desire, memorial tributes may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Community Living Es County or charity of your choice would be appreciated in lieu of flowers. A private family service will be held on Saturday March 5th, 2022, with cremation to follow. The cycle of life continues with the arrival of Spring, at which time we will look forward to “A Celebration of Dorothy’s Life”, date and time to follow.
