Dorothy Ida “Dot” (MacDonald) Carter
1924-2022
A kind and gentle
soul, Gramma Dot passed away peacefully in Blomidon Court, Greenwich,
Kings Co. on Wednesday, August 31, 2022 at the tender age of 98
years.
Dear Mum to Dr. Lorna,
Dartmouth; Bruce (Heather), Kingston; and Terry (Janet), Waverley.
Beloved Gramma Dot to her grandchildren: Stephanie (Mike Fowler),
Leanne (Adam Easson), Dr. Sherri (Matt Smith), Rachel (Teddy Bobier)
and Dr. Joey (Mylene Pinet); as well as her ten
great-grandchildren.
She was born in
Toronto on February 17, 1924, to the late Clifford A. MacDonald and
Anna (Cameron) MacDonald Tanner. She grew up on a farm in Riverton,
Pictou County, and later in Truro where she graduated from Success
Business College. While working in Halifax as the Executive Assistant
to the President of National Sea, she met our father at a dance at the
Jubilee Boat Club. They married in 1949 and began raising their family
in Dartmouth until Dad’s work took them to Kentville in
1965.
Mum was a proper lady
of great Christian faith and spent most of her life in the work of her
church – first at Grace United in Dartmouth and later at St.
Paul and St. Stephen in Kentville. During her lifetime, she served as
a Sunday School teacher, UCW president, chair of the Board of
Trustees, and in church governance with both the Valley and Maritime
Presbytery. Her entire life was spent helping others in
need.
She never forgot her
Scottish heritage and was a proud member of the Clan Donald. She
founded the Valley Chapter of the Clan, and as a result, she was
honored in 2007 with their provincial Lifetime Achievement
Award.
She had varied interests that included reading,
painting, baking, bridge, square dancing, growing award winning roses,
traveling, and taking care of her family. Mum also loved her afternoon
tea and sweets.
In addition to her
parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth Miller Carter, in
1981, and her sister, Bessie Jean (Betty) Mcdonald in
1994.
For the past eleven
years, she has been a resident of Blomidon Court, and we wish to thank
the staff for their excellent and compassionate care. Special thanks
go to Leanne and Margie for their assistance in her final
illness.
A Celebration of Life
will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 13, 2022 in the White
