Donald Kay Bennett was born February 21, 1932 in Magrath, Alberta, to John Ray Bennett and Isabel R Steed. With his 5 siblings, Don was raised on the family farm south east of Spring Coulee, Alberta, during the great depression and then World War 2. Don always remembered a humble farm home filled with love, laughter, good home cooking, hard work, farm chores, family outings, play, reading, responsibility, music and love. His parents worked hard, and taught their children to work hard, be good, do the right things, and they also emphasized the value of university education.
Don’s formal education started at Vernal school, a one-room rural school 1.5 miles from home, to which he either walked or rode a horse. Next came grades 3 through 9 in Spring Coulee and then grades 10-12 in Magrath High School. After graduating High School Don faithfully served in the Kentucky, Tennessee Central States mission.
Don then went to Edmonton to the University of Alberta where he earned a “Normal “ certificate that allowed him to start teaching, he then took summer and night courses to complete his BSC. degree in Education. He was also educated in welding and heavy duty mechanics.
After a brief courtship, Don Bennett and Darlene Elder were married in the Cardston Temple, and this union resulted in 4 sons and 2 daughters, in Edmonton, listed above. After they divorced, as a single parent Don raised his children, and did an amazing job, while teaching school full time, and serving in a variety of church callings, including working in the new Edmonton Temple.
Don and Cathy met at a multi-stake Single Adult conference in Raymond. Once married Don became the bonus dad to Cathy’s 4 daughters and their children. Don was a wonderful influence in all their lives, teaching them kindness, dedication, love and gratitude. Don and Cathy served together in church callings, helping in their community and serving 3 missions in California, Alberta and Saskatchewan. They enjoyed 34 amazing years of marriage while making many happy memories.
Don and Cathy moved from Edmonton to Southern Alberta in 2013 and currently reside in Raymond at Prairie Ridge Lodge.
