Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of Donald Alan Scott, announce his passing on August 25, 2022 at the age of 76, following an 8 week battle with Pancreatic Cancer.
When Don entered a room, it wasn’t long before everyone realized he was there. His voice would carry across vast distances and his laughter would echo around the space, usually lightening any mood and bringing joy to those in attendance. He will be remembered not only for the gift of merriment, but also his care for others. If you were a person in need, whether friend or new acquaintance Don was there to help in any way he could. He called a great many people his friends, striking up random conversations with strangers that often ended in deep discussion. Don was a man of strong faith in Jesus, and endeavored to share that love with all around him. He was diligent in prayer not just for his loved ones but so many others that needed it. Those close to Don were blessed by his timely words of encouragement, wisdom, and comfort. God had put a song in Don’s heart and he let everyone know about it with his strong singing voice. Don had a deep love for his immediate and extended family, and we all loved him back. Don as Husband, Father, Grandfather, Uncle, or Friend will be profoundly missed.
We love you Don.
Don leaves behind his wife of 51 years, Dorothy Scott; his 3 children, Lisa Scott (Smith) with husband Janu Smith and children Brynne and Kian, Deborah Scott (Morabito) with children Loren and Olivia, and Patti Scott (Bueckert) with husband Patrick Bueckert and children Donovan and Roman; as well as his brother Ken Scott and wife Ruth Scott, along with the rest of his extended family and friends.
Donald Alan Scott was born in Vancouver on October 26th 1945 to Elsie and Jim Scott. When Don was a teen the family moved to Burnaby and began attending Ruth Morton Memorial Baptist Church. Once Don graduated High School he attended UBC for one year before switching to North West Baptist College for three years, earning a Theology Degree in 1967. During this time he met his future wife Dorothy Otterbein and asked her to be his escort for graduation (she was only 16).
Don then returned to UBC attending from 1967-1972 earning a Bachelor of Science and his Professional Teaching Accreditation. While attending UBC Don and Dorothy dated and eventually tied the knot in 1971. Don’s love of singing grew during his time at University as he was part of a UBC Brethren singing group consisting of eight men.
The young couple moved to Michigan for a one year term as they worked on a Missionary Internship including a trip to Zaire/Congo with African Inland Mission. While the plan was to move into full time mission work the Lord had other ideas and in 1973 their first daughter Lisa Marie was born and they moved to Revelstoke where Don had accepted a teaching position at the local High School. In 1974 Don and Dorothy helped plant the Revelstoke Baptist Church with the Spencers, Hills, and Eadie Families. At the school Don taught Math, Science, Chemistry and Biology. Outside of school Don was a Youth Leader, mentoring young teens in outdoor pursuits and spiritual matters.
As a young boy Don had observed his father act as the song leader in Church and he fulfilled that role in the new Baptist Church, raising the decibels every time the music started. During this time God provided deep, lifelong friendships for Don and Dorothy as they worked in the Church.
Revelstoke was the perfect venue for Don to pursue his many recreational activities…..hockey, curling, hiking, canoeing, camping, baseball, running, cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, playing the piano and trumpet.
They welcomed their second daughter Debbie Anne in 1977 and their youngest daughter Patricia Lynn in 1980. Don and Dorothy relished their time in Revelstoke spending 35 years there, with Don teaching for 32 years until his retirement. In 2008 Don and Dorothy moved to Kelowna where they have spent the past 14 years, helping care for Dorothy’s mom Charlotte, and assisting various others who needed care. They also began attending Trinity Church and Don became involved with the Adult Friendship Group, Men in Action, acting as a Church Deacon and leading bible studies and care groups.
Don also found time for one of his favourite activities….playing the Trumpet (its sound fit his personality), and joined the Kelowna City Band playing the 3rd Trumpet. Don and Dorothy were happily married for 51 years until his passing on August 25th , 2022.
A Celebration of Life is to be held on Thursday September 1, 2022 at 11:00am at the Trinity Church in Kelowna, after which a lunch will be served. All are welcome.
