Obituary
Our family is overwhelmed with sadness as we say goodbye to the amazing man we knew and loved as a father, brother, and son. With gratitude and respect for a good life, well lived, we know that others also mourn our loss. Some of you knew Derek as a friend, but even then, you weren’t just a friend, you were family to him.
Derek had a selfless soul, who always put other before himself. He would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. You always left him with warmth in your heart, a smile on your face, and laughter in your belly. All of us lived better lives because of Derek’s presence within them.
Derek is survived by his loving parents Jim and Pat Amey; his siblings Duncan and Debra Amey; his sons Blair and James Amey; his grandson Jordan Amey-Gehring; and many people who held a special place in his heart. Derek was predeceased by his brothers Darryl, Danny, and Don.
Derek lived his life to the fullest. He always had some sort of clever remark to put that smile on your face and keep you on your toes. He spent most of his life working as a floor installer. He loved working with his hands and creating beautiful pieces out of wood. No one will ever forget the “Bum Kicking Game” that was always played whenever you were around Chief.
We all miss Chief so much that it hurts. In our pain, Derek’s family hopes the people who knew and loved Derek will treasure his memory and seek to move through the world as he did, a smile on his face, full of laughter, and always ready to offer a helping hand to anyone that needs one.
If friends or family so desire, memorial donations can be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Remember Me
by David Harkins
You can shed tears that he is gone,
Or you can smile because he lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that he will come back,
Or you can open your eyes and see all that he has left.
Your heart can be empty because you can’t see him,
Or you can be full of the love that you shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday,
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember him and only that he is gone,
Or you can cherish his memory and let it live on.
You can cry and close your mind, be empty, and turn your back,
Or you can do what he would want:
Smile, open your eyes, love and go on.
