It is with great sorrow that we share news of the death of our beloved Derek Joachim Ahnert. Born December 27, 1989, Derek lost his battle with mental illness on October 9, 2022 at the age of 32. Derek was a kind and loving soul who had a difficult path in this life. His depth for love was equal to his depth for sorrow. He felt life and all it’s struggles more than most because he saw past the illusion of this world which made it hard to survive this human life.
Those who knew Derek, loved him immensely. He was a funny guy who made people laugh, have fun and filled them with love. He was passionate about cooking and we all loved eating what he made. His love for music and concerts will live on in all of us whenever we listen to the vast array of music that Derek liked or go to a concert.
Derek survives in the hearts of his mother Heidi Ahnert, sister Tina, grandparents Gina and Richard, his uncles, aunts, nieces, cousins, friends and Shayla and Dani who held special places in his heart. Derek’s love and memories will live on in all our hearts and minds.
May we all take this tragedy and give volume to the conversation on how we as a society support the mental health of all beings.
A celebration of life will be held in December. Details will be announced.

“I encourage you to make peace with death, to see it as the culminating adventure of this adventure called life. It is not an error. It is not a failure. It is taking off a tight shoe which you have worn well.”
– Ram Dass
