EHLER, Denton Roney – Hello everybody, my name is Danielle Ehler. I am the wife of Denton’s grandson, Ryan. I would like to thank the family for allowing me the honour of speaking on behalf of Denton, who we all knew as Denny. Denny was well known around the community and I’m sure if you’ve ever had the opportunity to know him, work for him, or even just stopped into the station, he probably told you a story or two that left you scratching your head. And unlike his stories, I will do my best to keep this brief.
Although Denny spent the latter part of his life here on the island, he was originally from Halifax where he and his wife, Christine started their lives together. Denny met Tina in 1954 and the two married in ’56…they just celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary on November 15th.
Denny had a very strong work ethic, and he even spent 5 years serving in the navy. Denny was also an avid businessman. He spent many years working for Oland Brewery, and even ran both a construction and trucking company. For most of us here today, we knew Denny through his years of running a successful establishment which included a service station, convenience store, fast food outlets, sears outlet and tow truck company. Although his accomplishments were many, he was his happiest during his time driving the school bus. And if you were lucky enough to be on his run, you might have even been greeted with a box of smarties—unless you were Cassie – then it was an embarrassing photo with the bus driver in front of the entire bus on the first day of school.
Together Denny and Tina raised three sons, Denton, Arthur and Randy, all whom continue to reside here in Whycocomagh with their families. After working along side of their father for many years, it’s no surprise that they all now drive for the school board as well. At this rate it looks like Ryan, you’ll have to get your 2nd class licence as it appears driving the school bus is in your blood and a requirement for the Ehler men.
Denny loved his sons very much and also leaves behind daughter-in-laws, Janet, Elaine and Beverly; Grandchildren, Tammy, Alicia, Ryan, Cassandra, Candice and Mya, and even a few great grandchildren: Abbey, Riley and Hayden…all of whom he was very proud of. If you’ve ever been up to Denny and Tina’s place, there is quite literally no space on the wall or tables as they are filled with pictures of them all.
While listening to stories with the family over the last few days, I would like to share a funny story. As you know Denny was a very prideful man. He took a lot pride in his home and his sports cars, and the store and service station were no different. One Halloween night Denny stayed up late and kept the store open, keeping a close watch over his domain as to make sure no shenanigans or mischief happened on his watch…well…. naturally this makes him an easy target. A hooded person comes in and starts walking around the store…and then this hooded person starts grabbing bags of chips and makes a run for it…and they thought they were getting off easily until the old fella started running… apparently he was quite quick back in the day (maybe the stories of running marathons were all true)….however, the culprit did manage to escape and it turns out the hooded figure was Elaine playing a prank on him… and no she never returned the chips.
In closing, I would like to thank you all again for joining us here today to celebrate the life of Denton. It really means a lot to the family. May he rest in peace.

  1. I was saddened to hear the news of Dennys death. Even though it was back in the 80s in Halifax when we knew him, I never forgot him, we bought the house he built and it was the finest we had!
    My sympathies to Tina. Sheena
