GILMORE, Henri “Denis” Leo
It is with much sorrow and broken hearts we say goodbye to our dear husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend Denis Gilmore on Wednesday, October 19, 2022 one week short of his 92nd birthday.
Denis was born on October 26, 1930 to Maurice and Irene (Lafrenière) Gilmore in Somerset, Manitoba, along with his siblings: Raymond (deceased), Ronald, Renee (deceased), Diane MacIver (Ross – deceased), Donald (Carolyn) and Paul (Jeanette).
He began his career in Fort William with the Royal Bank of Canada working in many different cities in Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec, retiring as Regional Manager in 1985 in Kingston, Ontario. He returned to Thunder Bay and began his second career as a small business consultant with Confederation College leaving in 1997. While in Fort William he met Ellen Anne Munro Bowles and they were married in 1952, having 46 joyful years together. They had three daughters: Suzanne (Robert) Gilmore-Strasters; Melanie Lampshire (Bill deceased); and Candace (Mitchell) Gilmore-Stephensen.
Denis was a devout Catholic and a long-time member of Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 9295 and 4th Degree Fr. Baxter Assembly, holding many positions over the years. He served as President of the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce during the 1970’s. Sports played a big part in his life, both as a participant and spectator. Denis was a huge Montreal Canadienes, Toronto Maple Leafs and Blue Jays fan, enjoyed curling for several years with the GoSlow league, and loved watching most sports on television. He also looked forward to his many games of crib with friends. Thank you to Gilles Boisvert for your many visits and crib games.
Denis met and married Darlene and they would have celebrated their 26th wedding anniversary next month. Predeceased by his parents, brother Raymond, sister Renee and first wife Ellen Anne. Survived by his wife Darlene, daughters Suzanne, Melanie and Candace, stepsons Richard Patriquin (Liz) and Randy Patriquin (Tammy), and by grandchildren Carrie Anne Tapak (Mike) and Sara and Mary Stephensen (Taylor), step grandchildren Madison, Kane and Kirra Patriquin, and great grandchildren Ross and Eve, brother-in-law Ron Cleem. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 27th, at Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church, followed by inurnment at St. Andrew’s Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Denis requested donations be made to the Dew Drop Inn in his memory. A huge thank you to the staff of Bethammi Nursing Home where Denis has lived for the past year. He became friends with many of them. Know that your concern and care for Denis did not go unnoticed and was greatly appreciated.
