It is with great sadness we announce that David passed away peacefully with his family at his side on Sunday, December 11, 2022 at age 90. David was predeceased by his wife, Jean of 60 years, his brothers Clark Evans and Tom Evans and sisters, Agnes Sutherland, Esther Dawson, Olive Barrett and Evie New.
David is survived by his companion of 5 years Catherine McKague, son Robert Evans, daughter Gloria Crookes (Kevin) and their children Jennifer Ranger (Jim), Graham Crookes (Mackenzie) and Andrew Crookes (Melissa McLean). He is also survived by his great grandchildren, Milo and Ava Crookes.
David was born and raised in Oliver and spent a short time in Edmonton after High School working in the grocery industry, but farming was his true love which brought him back to Oliver and he and Jean married and took over Flora McPherson’s family farm.
During his school years he studied violin under the Royal Canadian Conservatory and entered the Okanagan Valley Competitions in violin and band.
David led an active life right to the end. He operated the family orchard and cattle operation at Road 15 with Jean for 60 years with the help of Robert for 40 of those years. He semi-retired from farming at age 86. David also had a farm implement business known as Testalinda Equipment where he and Robert invented and repaired equipment for farmers in the area.
David was active in the local community, he was an Oliver Boy Scouts Master, a life member of the South Okanagan Sportsman Association, member of Oliver Search and Rescue and served on various committees and boards such as the Federal-Provincial Water Basin Study, RDOS Air Quality Committee, Southern Interior Hereford Breeders and Cattleman’s Association. He and Jean were exhibitors at the Annual Rock Creek Fall Fair and were vendors at the Oliver and Osoyoos Farmers Market.
One of David’s greatest accomplishments was the development and certification of the Okana apple which he wanted to establish and market to help the tree fruit industry. In addition to the Okana he spent the last 5 years of his life working on other potential apple varieties.
David never stopped learning, was always optimistic and looking to the future. He will be missed by his family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, Thursday December 29, 2022 at the Oliver United Church followed by a reception in the church lower hall.
