Obituary
Daphne McLaren died peacefully on August 5 at Maidstone, Saskatchewan two months short of her 99th birthday.
Daphne Kathleen Brown was born October 9, 1923 in North Battleford, Saskatchewan and grew up in the Lilydale District, south of Maidstone. After attending Normal School in Saskatoon, Daphne took a teaching position at the McLaren Rural School north of Maidstone, which is where she met a local farmer, Keith McLaren. They were married in 1945, and lived on the farm North of the Gully where they were active members in the life of that community. Daphne played enthusiastic roles in the McLaren Ladies Club, the Milleton Community Hall and the Maidstone Gully Multiple 4-H Club. She and her husband raised their family of five sons and one daughter on the farm and instilled in them their love of rural living. In1984 they moved into their new home in Maidstone.
Daphne enjoyed many activities well into her 90’s. During the summer months she tended flowers, including her favourite dahlias and gladiolas and she always grew enough vegetables to carry her through most of the year. She was well known for her quilts, sewn from scraps she had saved and salvaged. These she presented to her grandchildren as they arrived into the family fold and on their graduations as well as to many extended family members and community friends. She made countless braided floor rugs, also from salvaged and re-purposed clothes, on a frame which Keith made for her. These adorned kitchen floors and welcomed guests to many family homes.
Daphne was very active in the United Church Women’s group and the Maidstone Hospital Auxiliary, often making sandwiches and desserts for community events. She sat on the Board of Directors for the Maidstone Group Home for well over ten years, believing in helping those who lived in the community wherever and however she was able.
Daphne was predeceased by: her husband, Keith; sons, Edward (Ted) and Kenneth; daughter-in-law, Dorothy; grandson, Darcy; and great great-grandsons, Isaiah and Hurley.
She leaves behind: sons, Rod (Lily), Les (Kathy) and Pat (Charlene); daughter, Kathleen (Gary); daughter-in-law, Comfort Amoako; grandchildren, Akwasi (Ketty), Sewaa (Rick), Tiah (Marc), Stacey, Holly (Darrel), Jennifer (Trevor), Adam ( Megan ), Jeremy ( Melissa), Laurel (Ben) and Nathan (Laura); and many great grandchildren.
