Obituary
“I’ll fly away, oh glory
I’ll fly away, in the morning…”
It is with the heaviest of hearts that the family of Cyril Gordon Stryde announce his passing, on the morning of August 15, 2022, at Health Sciences North in Sudbury.Cyril was born in the small community of Embree, NL on October16, 1943 to Duke and Louise Stride and was 5th in line to a family of eleven children. Audrey Jenkins (Clayton predeceased), Myrel Dicks (Leonard), Lloyd Stryde (Margaret) both predeceased, Patricia Hayward (Cyril predeceased), Alonzo Stride (Lucy), Ruth Hajos (Ernie), Cecil Stryde (Gail), Pauline Wells (Ross), Kevin Stryde (Roxanne), Beverly Dawe (Eric). Dad loved all of his siblings dearly and always made a point of keeping in touch with all of them over the years. Dad left his hometown when he was 18 and headed for the mainland to find work. After spending a couple of years working in Toronto, he headed up to Sudbury where he heard of opportunity in the mines. He landed himself a good, secure job at INCO and not too long after that, he landed himself the “love of his life”, Jacqueline Shigwadja. She only needs to stroll through his boarding house one time and catch his eye and he was smitten. Mom was the “light of his life” and his very best friend. Together they created a family and welcomed 3 children into the world. To Dad, his family was everything and he always put them first. He loved his children dearly and is survived by Wayne (Sophie), Sandra (Paul Pigozzo) and Marley (Steve Kirkland predeceased). He was very proud of all of his kids. And just when you think there couldn’t be more love felt in a family, the grandkids come along. David, Tyler, and Alyssa had a very special place in Dad’s heart. Many wonderful days were spent out on the French, with these three. Sometimes the boys would drive Dad crazy and get into his tools in the shed. They would test him but it’s almost like they knew they had the “upper hand” on Poppa. And Alyssa, well she could do no wrong. She was the “apple of his eye”. Any mere mention of the boys doing something to upset her and Poppa was right there to defend her and give the boys a scolding glare! He loved to watch their activities, whether it was hockey, soccer, baseball or gymnastics, he was so proud and loved to cheer them on. One of my fondest memories is watching him at the hockey arena. He could always be seen standing by the glass, banging on it and cheering proudly for his grandsons. Dad also loved his grand “fur” babies. Marty, Zena, Lily and Pedro had a special place in his heart. Dad was a simple man who loved good people. He was generous, kind hearted and his love was displayed quietly. He had many treasured friends whom he welcomed into his home over the years. Many good times were enjoyed in the little stucco house on Tedman Ave. The guitars would come out, the country music would be playing and even poker nights would take place in that tiny kitchen. Dad was proud of his home and always kept things neat and clean. He could often be seen sweeping the back porch or the walkway to the house. Some neighbours would giggle at how he would sweep the road like he worked for the city or something. He’d have all his little trenches dug out front in the Springtime too. He was very meticulous about his home. Dad retired in 1997 from Inco with 30 years of service as a Miner. He and Mom were fortunate enough to enjoy 23 wonderful retirement years out at their little piece of heaven, on the French. They enjoyed the water, the fresh air, the birds and shared many beautiful sunsets together with glass of wine in hand. I’m pretty sure that these years were some of the best years of his life. Dad, as much as our hearts are broken, we are so glad that you are not suffering anymore. You are at peace now, your work here is done. We will miss you forever until we see you again.
“When the shadows of this life have gone
I’ll fly away
Like a bird from these prison walls
I’ll fly
I’ll fly away”
