Obituary of Crystal Prowse 1977-2022
Passed peacefully in St. John’s, NL, on March 10, 2022 after a sudden illness.
Crystal was born on April 11, 1977 in Grand Falls, NL to Christine and William Prowse, and was raised in Bishop’s Falls, NL. In 1988 Crystal received a life-saving heart transplant in London, Ontario, and was among the longest-lived heart transplant recipients in the world.
Crystal graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Carleton University, Ottawa, went on to achieve a diploma in Respiratory Therapy from Algonquin College, Ottawa, and was a practicing Respiratory Therapist for many years. Recently, she earned a Bachelor degree in Health Sciences from Thompson Rivers University, BC and had been in the process of developing a service for patient advocacy.
As a transplant recipient, she has inspired many by demonstrating her drive for constant self-improvement, and making the most of the gift of life she had received. From an early age she would help raise funds for transplant candidates and was active in the promotion of organ donor awareness through public speaking, media appearances and as a participant in events such as the Transplant Trot and Row 4 Heart.
Crystal had a deep interest in all things philosophical, and loved to learn. She constantly set goals for personal development and pushed through her boundaries whether it be learning to sing, play piano, develop physical fitness, or public speaking. She was an avid reader, enjoyed metal detecting, loved political debate, had a great fondness for animals (especially dogs), and had developed a recent interest in baking.
But she will particularly be remembered for her protectiveness and devotion to her family (especially nieces Willow and Meadow), and also her fiery spirit, quick wit, keen intelligence, sense of humour, and overall independent character.
Crystal is survived by her husband Allan Penny, mother Christine (Noble), father William, brother Shawn, sister-in-law Alyssa Snook, nieces Willow and Meadow, and beagle puppy Ruby; as well as a large and loving circle of aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws, and friends.

Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep
By Mary Elizabeth Frye
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Crystal
