It is with broken hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Chris after a courageous battle with cancer. He passed with his family by his side at home in Burlington on Tuesday August 16, 2022 at the age of 62. Loving husband and best friend of Donna Johnson (nee Richardson) for 38 years. Devoted father of Bryan Johnson (Samantha) and Jennifer Smyth (Justin). Proud grandpa of Blake, Avery, Maxwell, Owen and Cameran. Beloved son of Campbell Johnson and the late Carolyn Wylie (John Wylie). Brother of Sandra Johnson, Susan McCarthy (Doug Surerus), and Kim Fisher (Moe), and step brother of Krista Wylie (Emree Siaroff) and Jay Wylie (Diana Fleming). Dear son-in-law of Glenn and June Richardson, and brother-in-law of Rod Richardson (Carol Ann), David Richardson (Maria) and Gary Richardson (Erin). Chris will be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews and the extended Johnson and Richardson families. He will also be dearly missed by many friends including Tom and Sue Malizia, Peter and Linda Aumonier, and Duncan Pringle.
Chris lived his life to the fullest and loved deeply. With an outgoing nature Chris made friends easily and always lent a helping hand whenever needed. He had a passion for all that he did including the pipe band, golf and hockey but his true passion was spending quality time with his family.
For almost 50 years, Chris was an enthusiastic and skilled pipe bandsman competing on the Ontario pipe band circuit, across North America and Scotland. He was a valued piper with several world-class pipe bands, most notably Toronto & District Caledonia, Peel Regional Police, Toronto Police and, for the past 10 years, the 78th Fraser Highlanders. He loved competing at the highest level of the Grade 1 pipe band circuit and was a stalwart member of bands that won many North American Championships, Canadian Championships, American Championships and other accolades. He was very proud to have played with Rod Stewart, Paul McCartney and Natalie McMaster.
Chris received exceptional care during his 8 year battle with cancer and we are ever grateful to his health care team. A special thank you to Dr. Tsoi, Dr. Watson and Dr. Ferguson of Mount Sinai Hospital, Dr. Goldberg of the Juravinski Cancer Centre, Dr. McCarthy and Ildico Tettero of the Palliative Care Team and Dr. Dzaja at Joseph Brant Hospital, and to Dr. Lang, Joy and Tanja who supported Chris to have a peaceful death. A huge thanks to Sherry, Cynthia, Vera and Katie whose care and support allowed us to fulfill Chris’s wish of passing away in his home.
As per his wishes, Visitation will be held at SMITH’S FUNERAL HOME, 1167 Guelph Line (one stoplight north of QEW), BURLINGTON, 905-632-3333, on Monday, August 22, 2022 from 3-5pm and 7-9pm. A Funeral Service will be held at Lowville United Church, 5800 Guelph Line (at Britannia Rd), Burlington, on Tuesday, August 23, 2022 at 11:00am. Reception will follow at Mount Nemo Golf Club. Cremation and Private Family Interment to follow at a later date. As an expression of sympathy, and in lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Chris to either the Joseph Brant Cancer Clinic or the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (Ontario Region) would be sincerely appreciated by the family.
