Obituary
Christina Hulbert (nee Stewart) was born July 4, 1927 to Alexander and Margaret Stewart (nee Powell) in Drumheller, Alberta. She was the second eldest of seven children. Christina attended school in Midlandvale, Alberta until her mother died in 1941. She then stayed home to take care of her younger siblings. She moved to Coleman, Alberta at the age of 16 to help her father set up a home for the family. When she was 18 she met Vans who was home from SAIT for the summer. Vans and Christina were married September 22, 1947 during Vans’ second year of university. They welcomed their first child, Rodney, September 24, 1948 and their second child, Brenda, on June 10, 1950.
In September 1950, Vans, Christina, and Brenda moved to Sparwood, B.C. Vans and Christina had seven more children after the birth of Brenda. In October 1968 the family moved to Hinton, Alberta while Brenda stayed in Sparwood to raise her own family.
Christina (aka Nana) had a very calm, caring and gentle demeanour; everyone felt welcome in her home. She graciously accepted the arrival of additional children at her table whenever the smell of her freshly baked bread wafted through the neighbourhood. Her homemade fudge and butterhorns had the same effect. She was an excellent cook; the essential ingredient of every meal was love.
Family was very important to Christina. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Nana was happiest when holding a baby or interacting with young children at family gatherings. Christina also loved to knit and crochet for her beloved little ones.
Christina will be lovingly remembered by her surviving children and their families: grandson, Sean Taylor; daughter, Glenna (Ted) Ted and Greg Armstrong; son, David (Layne) Hulbert, Nicola (Chris) Eddy, and Kristin (Bruce) Nelson; daughter, Beth (Dwayne) Coelen, Kelsi (Trevor) Wallace, and Leigh (Justin) Drake; son, Murray (Sandy) and Vans Hulbert, and Amanda (Martin) Antoniak; daughter, Laura Hulbert; son Brad (Tanya) Krystina and Kalum Hulbert, and Trista D’Aoust; and daughter Audrey (Keith) Gibson. She is also survived by 17 great-grandchildren, and one great great-grandchild. Christina is fondly remembered by her surviving siblings: one brother, Archie (Sandy) Stewart of Calgary, Alberta and one sister Sandra (Ernie) Stewart Kirschenman of Medicine Hat, Alberta.
Christina was predeceased by her son Rodney Vans Hulbert on June 10, 1950, her husband Vans Havelock Hulbert on November 20, 1981, her daughter Brenda Christine Taylor on May 4, 1997, and her grandson Kirt Warren Taylor on May 4, 2013.
