Obituary
The family of Charles “Charlie” Rowat are sad to announce he passed away peacefully on Monday March 21, 2022 at Dulcina Hospice at the age of 86 surrounded by the love of his family throughout this journey. The third youngest of ten children, Charles was born in Stettler, AB on September 8, 1935 to William Rowat and Annie Rowat (nee McLeod) and grew up in Crossfield, AB. He was the last surviving sibling of his family.
Dad’s early career was in the banking industry and he travelled to many small towns throughout southern Alberta helping to set up new one room bank branches. It was in Lethbridge that he met a young nurse from Nova Scotia, Shirley Flood, whom he later married. In 1957 Dad switched careers and joined Hudson Bay Oil and Gas (HBOG) in Estevan, Saskatchewan and shortly after Mom and Dad started their married life together. In 1959 they moved to Calgary and Dad continued his long career in the oil and gas industry as a landman with HBOG, Dome Petroleum, Amoco Canada, BP Canada and then Talisman Energy. After retiring from the oil and gas industry he became a realtor and was active in that field for many years.
Charles was always a family man and we spent many weekends helping in his father’s butcher shop and visiting with his family in Crossfield. As his children grew Dad spent many hours at outdoor hockey rinks shoveling snow and flooding the ice, at ball diamonds and shuttling us back and forth to sports, music lessons, after school activities and part-time jobs. Later on, Dad was a regular fan at many of his grandchildren’s sporting and dance activities. Family dinners and celebrations were always something Mom and Dad planned to make sure everyone was included, and occasions celebrated. After many active years in the Brentwood and Edgemont communities Charles spent his last five years at Chartwell Colonel Belcher making new friends and keeping a busy social calendar of outings, card nights and bartending at their weekly pub events.
Dad will be missed by his children; Cindy (Terry), Kim (Robyn), Bill (Colleen), Brenda and Greg; his nine grandchildren, Kathleen (Andrew), Connor, Carson (Kelly), Linden (Kayla), Sam (Ally), Charles, Stephen (Jess), Grayson and Jayden; his nine great-grandchildren and numerous extended family. Dad was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Shirley, in 2013, his parents, his five brothers and four sisters.
The family wishes to thank Dr. D. Sung and the staff and Doctors of Palliative Home Care for their care of Dad. Special thanks to Dr. Sharma and staff at Dulcina Hospice for taking wonderful care of Dad during his stay.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Luke’s Catholic Church on Monday March 28, 2022 at 1:00 pm. There will be tribute to Dad before the Mass starting at 12:45 pm. Graveside service will be immediate family only.
Dad’s favourite colours were green and blue, so if you are able to wear something green or blue in his honour, both he and the family would smile. The family respectfully asks that masks be worn by those attending the service. For those unable to attend the service, the tribute and service will be livestreamed* starting at 12:45 pm as well as recorded for viewing later.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Charles’ honour to Dulcina Hospice (by cheque) mailing address: 110 Evanspark Manor N.W. Calgary, AB T3P0N4.
