Catherine took pride & was an extremely conscientious Executive Assistant for the Canadian Railway, Hudson Bay House, and Bristol Aerospace, Winnipeg; Real Estate agent in Barrie, Ont. and finally retired after 18 yrs. as the Commanding Officer’s Secretary for 436 Sqn. CFB Trenton, Ont. Though very proud of David, & her 2 daughters, she was enormously proud of her 3 grandchildren with whom she spent as much time as possible.
Catherine was born, a non-person in 1927 in Misericordia Hospital, Winnipeg on Christmas Eve. A child of the Great Depression, eldest of 4, completed her Matriculation & University entrance exams 1945 in Charleswood; sandbagged in the 1950 Great Winnipeg Flood; attended business college (worked her way through with her exceptional Pitman Shorthand); married in 1954, a Cold War pilots’ wife across the country from her family; survived ruptured appendix; numerous operations including thyroid removal twice and severe depression; 2 house fires; heart attack; breast cancer; and at 92 was still driving to clubs and visiting friends in their Seniors’ homes.
Vital, determined, and young at heart, Catherine will be fondly missed by all the lives she touched with her friendly smile, kindness, ease, and generosity. She was “ the unofficial Squadron confidant”! Mom was always there for anyone who needed her.
Mom would have liked to wish everyone she knew the best and to let them know just how much she appreciated them.
The family extends heartfelt thank you to all the caregivers in BGH Emergency Dept., on the 5th & 6th floors Quinte and in the ICU for their outstanding help in Catherine’s time of need.
In lieu of flowers, donations to BGH Foundation, Heart & Stroke Foundation or The Breast Cancer Society of Canada in memory of Catherine will be appreciated by her family.
Cremation has taken place; arrangements entrusted to Steele Funeral Home, Moira Street Chapel, Belleville (613-968-2273)
A Celebration of Life will be held this spring at Farmgate Gardens where Catherine spent many happy hours.
