Bernard Red Rubenstein 2022

Bernard (Red) Rubenstein
It is with great sadness that the family of Bernard (Red) Rubenstein announce his passing on Saturday, January 1, 2022, at the age of ninety-seven. Devoted and beloved husband of Pearl Eisenberg for thirty-four years. Dear son of the late Isidore and the late Rose Rubenstein. Father of Elizabeth Joffe, Robert, Michael (Claudia) and Philip. Brother of the late Beatrice Katchanoff, the late Seymour and cherished big brother of Trudy Friedman; and brother-in-law of the late Herbert Friedman, Herb Eisenberg (Goldie), and Sharon Eisenberg. Stepfather of Howard (Debbie Lis), Andrea and Dr. Howard Petroff. Adored grandfather of Carla Joffe (Michael Armstrong), Michael Joffe (Adele Charlebois), Erik Joffe (Gillian), and Stephen Joffe (Jesse), Adrianne Rubenstein. Great-grandfather of Henry and Sasha Armstrong, Oscar Charlebois-Joffe, and Max and Jordan Joffe. Predeceased by his first wife, Dr. Wanda Schiffman M.D. Beloved uncle of Mark, Andrea, and the late Randy Friedman.
Born into the rough times of the 1920’s, Bernard succeeded. Upon graduation from high school, he volunteered for military service, joining the RCAF and serving as a Wireless Air Gunner (W.A.G.) for the period of 1942-1945. At demobilization, he attended and graduated from McGill University with a diploma in law. During his time at McGill, he continued his military service until he retired with the rank of Captain in the RCA (R), completing fifteen years of service to his country. He retained his strong love of country and was most proud of taking a stand against the evil that had consumed much of the world. Following graduation, he founded and operated his own insurance brokerage Bernard Rubenstein, Chartered Insurance Brokers, with offices in Canada, USA, and the UK.
He took pride in his public service serving as a Vice President of Boscoville, and as an Alderman in the Town of Hampstead. He was past President of No. 1 Branch Royal Canadian Legion and past President of Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom.
Bernard was a straight-talking man who did not suffer fools lightly. In a crisis, he was unflappable and would speak the truth that some did not wish to hear. A skilled problem solver, he had the ability to reduce complex issues to a form that all could understand. With his ever-present cigar, he enjoyed his Montreal Canadiens and calls from or visits with his grandchildren. He never forgot the dogs and cats that had kept him company over the years, including his beloved Great Dane, Princess. Bernard will be remembered as a man of character, honesty, strength, and compassion to those less fortunate. Most importantly, he was very appreciative of the attentive care that his wife Pearl had given him.
