Obituary
Bernadene Mary Walsh entered into her Savior’s eternal peace on October 29, 2022 in the palliative care unit of the Saint John Regional Hospital following a very sudden and devastating illness.
Bernadene was born August 12, 1943 in Saint John. She was lovingly adopted by Amos and Doris (Hatt) Walsh of Blacks Harbour, where she was raised as their only child. Her childhood in Blacks Harbour was one that she cherished and always spoke fondly of, surrounded by numerous extended family and close friends. Following a hairdressing education at St. Andrews Community College she moved to Saint John and remained a resident of the West Side for over six decades. Told all of her adult life she would be unable to have children, when she was 43 she gave birth to her daughter, Patricia Joy and raised her on her own with love and support from friends and family. Patricia brought to Bernadene’s life a new opportunity for love and youthfulness, and she took that love and the twinkle in her eyes that accompanied and carried it with her since that moment on. She embraced mothering with strength and determination and provided Patricia love and guidance and endless support.
In her adult years she reconnected with her family of origin including two loving siblings whom welcomed her into their family with open arms. She was so very proud to be called sister and loved her siblings dearly. She was also beloved by her forever family in Harvey, who provided deep friendship and support in raising Patricia. Through all these family connections, Bernadene watched her nieces, nephews, and their children grow up through decades of joyous family moments.
For many years Bernadene was a well known and respected professional hairdresser who worked at several salons over the years- including her own on the West Side. It was there she met the “sweet girls at the shop” who became her best friends and family to Patricia. Her career was never work to her and enjoyed everyday with her customers. Starting when Patricia was a young child, Bernadene became was a long-time member of Calvary Temple Church in uptown Saint John. The church community fostered Bernadene’s love for Jesus Christ and through that, her love for others. She was a former member of a Saint John curling club where she formed special friendships that would remain dear to her throughout her life. She forever spoke fondly of her youth in Blacks Harbour and the loving family and friends whom she grew up with, many of whom she remained dear to her throughout her life.
She is immediately survived by her daughter Patricia Joy (Hussey) and husband, Joshua, as well as her beloved grandchildren Annie, Simon, Charlie, and Jonah.
Arrangements are entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John (646-2424). Visitation will be held from Calvary Temple, 83 Sydney Street on Thursday from 6-8 p.m. The funeral service will be held from Calvary Temple on Friday, November 4th at 10:00 a.m. Interment will take place in the Pennfield Rural Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances to Calvary Temple would be appreciated.
