Barbara Howard “Nana Barb” passed away peacefully in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia on February 8, 2022 surrounded by her husband of 50 years, Paul, and her three daughters. Barb was the daughter of the late Margaret (Boyle) and John Sheehan of Moncton and is survived by her two sisters, Francy Sheehan-Ward and Sandy Sheehan.
Barb graduated from Moncton High School in 1961, St. Francis Xavier University in 1965 and the University of Ottawa in 1968. Early in her career as a psychologist she worked at the Dr. William F Roberts Hospital School in Saint John and later at School District 6 in Rothesay, NB.
Barb and Paul raised their family in Westfield, New Brunswick. They relocated to Porters Lake, Nova Scotia in 2018. Barb is survived by her three daughters, Kerry Buckley (Mark) of Ottawa, Patty Howard (Ted Tupper) of Bedford and Jane Yeo (Wade) of Porters Lake and her six grandchildren, Ryan, Matthew, James, Nolan, Kathleen and Neil.
Barb will be remembered for her kind, generous soul and boundless positivity. There is much to take away from Barb’s calm, quiet and thoughtful way of being. Her beautiful warm smile and the gift of seeing the best in people and making the most of difficult life challenges are teachings that will be in the hearts of family and friends who loved her deeply.
Barb enjoyed many family holidays over the years, especially long days at the beach. She was an avid reader, gardener, walker and lover of coffee and chocolate. She enjoyed music, played the piano and encouraged her children and grandchildren to pursue music education. Barb embraced lifelong learning and took violin and fiddle lessons in her seventies to be able to play with her grandchildren. Barb was a devoted hockey, basketball, tae-kwon-do, guitar and fiddle spectator in her retirement, as her grandchildren’s biggest fan. She adored every moment of being Nana Barb.
A private celebration of Barb’s life is planned. Donations can be made in her name to the Canadian Cancer Society or Read Saint John.
