Obituary
Antonio D. Chan of Calgary, AB, CA, known to many as Tony (the handsome manager as he used to say), passed away unexpectedly and peacefully on August 22, 2022, surrounded by his family. He was 67 years of age. The family is both devastated and shocked by his death. Tony arrived into this world on April 23, 1955, in Bacnotan, La Union, Philippines, born to Chan Lin Choy and Dolorina Delfinado.
Tony graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce Major in Accounting at Saint Louis University, Baguio City, Philippines in 1974, and over the course of his life, he worked in various areas of Banking and cooking, always good with his numbers. The skills and knowledge he had acquired, enabled him to make his dream a reality and he became a Bank Manager. He was able to manage several branches of Allied Bank in the Philippines, proud to be part of Lucio Tan’s banks, one of the richest men in the Philippines who is a very well-known owner of the Philippine Airlines. Unfortunately, he didn’t become the president of the Philippines (one of his aspirations), otherwise, he would have encouraged everyone to be his drinking buddies anytime of the day till everyone drops! Those who knew him have their own stories to tell, omg! He said what he meant and meant what he said. Although known as “occasionally, slightly heavy drinker” and most strict in the family or to many, there was another side of him. He was compassionate to the needy, homeless, and less fortunate, not to mention food and money for daily existence. Many have reached out to say how grateful they were that he cared for them and extended his hand without expecting something in return.
He fully enjoyed what he did and those he met in his days. He made the time to show up for everyone who reached out, providing alcohol (the main ingredient to everything) care and sound counsel. He simply wanted to brighten lives in his days and that he surely did. Peace and caring permeated him and kindness felt like it was his middle name.
In addition to his parents, Tony was predeceased by his sister, Dorothea, and his wife, Edna. He is survived by his sisters Adelina (queen Lina), Flordeliza, Catherine (Catitay); and brothers Arnulfo, Guillermo(Don Gil), Plaridel, and Gene. He leaves behind daughters Roxanne and Rachel. There are several nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will miss him dearly.
Last but not the least, Tony would be annoyed if we neglected to mention his passion for John Denver and Kenny Rogers songs because honestly, he might have loved them more than his buddies. He used to say, ‘it’s not how many notes you play or how fast you play them but how well they’re played.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, August 27, 2022, at Evan J. Strong Funeral Services (5502 2 St. SW) at 2:00 pm.
A Celebration of Life to follow at a later date.
