Anthony Littlewood
September 17, 1946 – May 29, 2022

Capt. Anthony (Tony) Littlewood, MN left this port of call to sail into the sunset on Sunday
29 May, 2022. Destined for the sea from the moment he joined the Sea Cadets as a young
boy, Tony always knew that the next adventure lay over the horizon; he was always most
free on the water, called like a sailor to a Siren, despite having also qualified as an
electrician. As we all know, electricity and water don’t mix, and his decision between the two
was clear from the start. He met his best friend and future wife, Pat, on the first day of school
when they were both 5 years old. Together they built a home and a family that love each
other deeply and without reservation.
Despite a cruel twist of fate dropping him into a landlocked town in the North of England,
Tony travelled far and wide with work, though it was never a chore for him. He worked his
way up the ladder from Apprentice to Master Mariner and knew his craft inside and out. He
survived the Vietnam War, accidents at sea and various appalling Father’s Day breakfasts
from his children when they were younger; he was indeed a trooper. Whether he was at sea
or on land, he entertained all who met him with his vast collection of anecdotes of his bizarre
life events which he collected with ease, making friends across the globe.
He could always be counted on for a good (or bad) Dad joke and an amazing stir fry, and he
was a man who knew the value of a good English fried breakfast. He was an excellent cook
and an avid animal lover, sharing his life and home with numerous dogs, all of whom knew
that he could always be counted on to provide extra treats, and to smuggle food to them
under the table, much to his wife’s chagrin.
He was predeceased by his father, William (Bill), mother, May and brother James (Jim). He
leaves behind a devoted wife, Pat (nee Cook), children Ian, Kirsten (Chris), Antonia (Randy)
and Debbie (Eric) and grandchildren Ryker, Emilie, Sophie, Mirielle (Debbie) and Henley
(Antonia).
The oceans have wept that one of their own
should be kept from them for so long.
Now their gain is our loss and you’re finally free,
to go back to the place you belong.
The oceans are yours to travel again
To go where you wish and explore
Now you have sails of your own to use
to navigate every shore.
Sadness, you said, was returning to port
Now you’re free to sail for all time.
I think of you sailing, wherever you please
Happy again, in the brine.
Now starlight, and sunlight, and crystal seas
will not allow me to mourn,
as you sail your way to eternity
through diamond night and golden dawn.
Bon Voyage
