Obituary
With profound sadness, the family of the late Anne Bennett announce her passing at the Canora Gateway Lodge, Canora, SK, on September 11, 2022, at the age of 89 years.
Anne was born at the Petruniak family farm in the Calder District, SK, to Steve and Helen (nee Yaremko) Petruniak on December 11, 1932. She was the fifth of ten children. Anne attended Torsk School, where she participated in Ukrainian dance, often doing a male role, as there were not always enough boys. After leaving school, she worked as an aide at the Yorkton General Hospital. There, she met her future husband, Gerald, an electrician. They were married at St. Gerard Church, Yorkton, SK, on May 1, 1957. Gerald’s job with the CNR took them to Prince George, BC, where they were blessed with three children, Patricia, Jo-Ann, and Barbara.
In 1964, the family moved to Kamloops, BC, where Gerald passed away of cancer in 1969. Anne began working at a bakery and part time at the post office until she was able to get a job at a nursing home. In 1972, Anne and the girls moved to Saskatchewan. Anne worked at the Gateway Lodge, where she completed her CNA course. She retired in 1995.
She loved to help where needed. Many shared meals came from her kitchen. A lot of perogies, cabbage rolls, elephant ears, cookies, and scuffles were enjoyed. These were her treats for her children and grandchildren.
Anne enjoyed Bingo, reading, jigsaw puzzles, word search, and crocheting. Her favorite pastime was watching curling and game shows. She always treated everyone with kindness and respect, and lived her life with humor, compassion, and a strength of character to be admired. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Anne was predeceased by her husband, Gerald Bennett; parents, Steve and Helen Petruniak; sisters, Dora Werner and Wilma Austin; and brothers: George, William, and James Petruniak; her niece, Diane Hansen; and brothers-in-law: Roland Werner, Dan Mankish, Nick Wandy, and Edward Boychuk.
She is survived by her daughters, Patricia (Wes) Popoff, Jo-Ann Bennett (Donald Paniuk), and Barbara Bennett; grandchildren: Daniel Popoff, Leanne Popoff (Josh Brown), Terri (Lorne) Lillebo, Tracy Andrews, Ethan (Rebekah) Bennett, and Miranda Andrews (Allen Caldwell); great-grandchildren: Lily, Sawyer, Jim, Travis, Bennett, Austin, Dameon, Isabella, Logan, Leah, Breanna, and Lukas; sisters: Kathleen Boychuk, Margory Mankish, Shirley (Eric) Hansen, and Virginia Wandy; and her sister-in-law, Kay Bennett; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
A Private Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Gateway Community Church, Canora, SK, with Pastor Greg Bright officiating. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to Diabetes Canada or to Autism Canada, as tokens of remembrance, in memory of Anne Bennett.
