Obituary
The family of the late Anna Strocen announce her passing at the Canora Gateway Lodge, Canora, SK, on July 24, 2022, at the age of 100 years.
Anna was born on August 20, 1921, to Massey and Molly (nee Kowal) Sleeva. She grew up on the family farm with her 4 brothers and 2 sisters. When Anna was just 13 years old, her mother passed away. After her mother’s passing, she had to quit school to take care of the responsibilities such as cooking, cleaning, and the regular farm chores that needed to be done. For the next 22 years, she stayed with her brothers and father.
In 1945, she met Joe Strocen at a neighbour’s house. One week later, they were married. Shortly after they were married, they moved to the family farm. Once married, life became a lot easier for Anna, working alongside her partner as they operated a mixed farm. Together, in 1956, they were blessed with their son, Mike. In 1963, Joe became sick and died shortly after. After Joe’s passing, Anna and Mike moved to Canora, SK.
Anna had many jobs after the move to town, where she worked at the Silver Grill Café, Maple Leaf Café, and Chicken Villa, as well as with Home Care.
She was an active member of the Ukrainian Catholic Church and was involved with the UCWL. She was also a member of the Canora Hospital Auxiliary.
Anna enjoyed gardening and was happiest being outside. The most important thing to her was her family. She will be missed by all those who knew and loved her.
In Anna’s honour, a Private Memorial Service will be held with Very Rev. Fr. Joakim Rac officiating. Interment of cremated remains will take place in the Canora Cemetery at a later date. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to the Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church – Building Fund or to the Canora Gateway Lodge Auxiliary, as tokens of remembrance, in memory of Anna Strocen.
