Obituary
Alfred Erwin Sommerfeld, aged 88, passed away peacefully the afternoon of January 7, 2022. Born
August 13, 1933 to Ludwig and Emma Benke, Al grew up on the Sommerfeld homestead in Brightholme
Saskatchewan, and later on the family farm in Shellbrook, alongside his brothers Max, Edwin, Armien,
and sisters Irma and Irene.
Al approached life earnestly, but with a smile and a twinkle in his eye. He enjoyed people, and his
authentic and playful way meant there were few who did not take joy and comfort in being with Al. As a
loving husband, father, and provider, Al was the cornerstone of a strong and happy family.
Al knew the secret of a healthy work-life balance. He enjoyed working tirelessly, whether on the job or
at home in the yard or in his wood shop. But still he always made time for family and community,
including coaching baseball and hockey, and leading Beavers/Cubs. Family camping trips to the
mountains, and Radium Hot Springs, Shuswap, and Penticton were mainstays for the family, so too were
regular adventures to Hawaii, Barbados, Mexico and California. Watching a good hockey or football
game were treasured quiet times after all the work was done.
Al ventured away from the farming life he grew up in and carved out a career in telecommunications,
first with CN Telecommunications, and then later with AGT and Telus. He met the love of his life,
Maureen Riddell in Prince Albert, and his job took them to Port Arthur, Winnipeg, Regina, and eventually
to Calgary where they settled to raise a family. In retirement they moved to High River and came to love
the town and community and friendships. Al was a man of faith and an active member of the Lutheran
Church.
Al is survived by his loving daughter Rondi Sommerfeld Newman, son Mark Sommerfeld, grandson
Garrett Newman, granddaughter Jasmine (Michael) Nicholson, and great granddaughter Iona Nicholson.
He is also survived by his son-in-law Garry Newman and daughter-in-law Tamara Sommerfeld, and many
nephews and nieces.
Services will be postponed until the spring and will take place at that time at the High River Good Shepherd Lutheran Church as well as at the Brightholme Cemetery. Donations can be made to the High River Good Shepherd Lutheran Church (910 12 Ave SW, High River, AB T1V 1C8) and/or the St. John’s Lutheran Brightholme Cemetery Fund (C/O Ron Ferster, Box 307, Shellbrook, SK S0J 2E0).
