Alexander’s Obituary
Alexander Campbell Thomson – Age 89 of Halifax, Nova Scotia, passed away on January 17th, 2022, in the Halifax Infirmary after a brief hospitalization. Born in Cambuslang, Scotland, he was the only child of Matthew Smith Thomson and Elizabeth Hood Campbell. He immigrated to Canada and married Jean Somers of Miramichi, New Brunswick. He served in the RAF in Scotland, and then served his new country in the RCAF, living in New Brunswick, British Columbia, and finally Nova Scotia.
Dad served his God, family and country with diligence, humility and faithfulness. Of most importance to him was his faith in Jesus Christ. The gospel of Jesus Christ was shared with Dad when he was in his late twenties. When he realized he needed to repent and turn away from sin and live a life honouring and glorifying to God he humbly asked the Lord to save him from self and sin and accepted the Lord Jesus into his heart and life. Dad served the Lord by being involved in and supporting multiple ministries. For a number of years, he and mom drove children to Sunday school and youth group together. In later years, he was the driver for the Sunday School program at Missionary Bible Church, Halifax. He supported a publication for children called the Bright Spot which is put out by Fundamental Evangelical Association. In addition, dad was a founding member of Truth for Youth Bible Camp, Blomidon, NS. Dad had a “single eye” focus and in his quiet, yet principled manner, left a spiritual legacy for the next generation. Dad was faithful in teaching the Word of God to all of his seven children. We had the wonderful blessing of having a father who sought to instill God’s principles and develop godly character in each of our lives. As an earthly father, he reflected to his own children the love of his Heavenly Father to His children. Dad set a good example of what love is. He loved God first and foremost, then Mom and lastly his family. Dad is mostly remembered for his gentleness and being a gentleman.
Dad was a hard worker. He was an avid prospector who was mostly self-taught. This was Dad’s “niche” as he referred to it. He would research old maps and reports of previous mining records from one end of Nova Scotia to the other and made countless trips to the Department of Mines and Resources, Halifax. There he developed a relationship with staff to whom he was very grateful for their assistance. Throughout those years of his endeavours the prospecting and mining community recognized dad for his contributions to the furthering development of mineral exploration within the province. He was awarded a Long Service award in 2019 and a Lifetime Achievement Award, both from the Mining Association of Nova Scotia in 2014. Additionally, Dad worked for Irving Oil and coupled that with a career in the RAF, UK and RCAF. In the RAF, Dad worked on the high-powered launch boats of the Air to Sea Rescue Service Division located in the North Sea. His various occupations were a means to an end for as a child of God he knew this world was not his home but rather his eternal home was Heaven with his Saviour and he was sure of it.
We are so thankful for the promise from God’s Word. John 14:18 KJV I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
Dad is survived by our mother and his wife of 62 years, Jean; sons, Bob (Cheryl), Sandy (Jo Anne), Leonard (Karen), Colin, and Graham (Brenda); by his daughters, Grace and Faith (Charles) Cullen; by his grandchildren, Matthew (Lindsey), Laura, Nathan, Alec, Rob, Jonathan, Scott, Megan (Tate Linzel), James, Fiona, Brett, Caleb, Lauren, Preston, Colin, Alexander and William; and by great-grandchildren, Kiana, Katelyn, Evelyn, Elizabeth, Allison, Anastasia, Logan, and Nolan. He was predeceased by his parents.
He was a member of Missionary Bible Church, Halifax, and previously of Calvary Baptist Church, Meadowvale. He was one of the founders of Truth for Youth Bible Camp, Blomidon. Through the years he supported the Fundamental Evangelistic Association and The Friends of Israel. He was also a lifetime member of the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC).
