Obituary
Alice Mildred Bedel
October 17, 1925 – February 13, 2022
It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of our dear Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother, Alice Bedel. She died peacefully in Indian Head Hospital with loving family by her side on February 13, at the age of 96. Alice was predeceased by her parents Horace and Ella (Wright) Wilson, son David Bedel, brothers Leonard and Lloyd Wilson, sisters Leith Sandercock, Annie Read, Fern Sandercock, Grace Pawliw, and her loving husband Maurice Bedel. Left to mourn her passing are her brother Ken Wilson and sister Helen Morton. Her children: Murray (Janet) and family Holly (Cory) and Brad (Aynsley); Larry (Julie) and family Kevin (Amy) and Jenna (Dane); Yvonne (Randy) and family Brent(Heather), Kim (Daniel), Jason (Amy), and Travis (Alin); Bev and family Tiffany (Matthew) and Tyler; and Sharon and family Larissa(Kevin) and Kyle (Angela) and 16 very precious Great Grandchildren. Alice was born the fifth child in a family of nine. She was raised on the family farm near Abernethy and attended Kenlis School. In 1947 she married Maurice in the Lebret church. The married couple lived on a farm in the RM of Abernethy which was across the road from the Bedel family farm. They would move to the village of Lebret during the winter months during which they would work at the Lebret Hotel. Alice also worked for the Oblate Fathers at the Seminary on Mission Lake as a cook and housekeeper. In later years she worked at the Ellis’ chicken farm, and later at the Kelly’s IGA store in Balcarres. They eventually moved across the road to the family farm when Maurice’s parents retired to Lebret. They had a family of three boys and three girls. They undertook a lot of farm ventures of the day and she would often tell us about butchering 300 Turkeys to sell, milking 17 cows (she always got the cream check), raising pigs and operating a grain farm. She had a lot of stories to tell about the trials and tribulations of raising six children. Although the boys kept her busy with their mischief at first, the girls ultimately caught up with their own misbehaviour. She had a large garden, and did a lot of canning of produce to have in the winter. There was still time for fun when she and Maurice would ski-doo with family and friends. They were proud to be the oldest riders in one of Sintaluta’s Poker Derbys but there were many others beside that one. Much of Alice’s family lived in the Balcarres area and she enjoyed time spent with all the many families. She leaves numerous nieces and nephews that she loved dearly and enjoyed their company so much.. Alice was a remarkable, hard working woman. She lived in her own suite at Heritage manor right up until her hospital stay at Indian Head. Although Covid did hamper her social outings for the while, her 96 years were filled with loving family, lifelong friendships and dear new friends. She rarely complained even up until the end and was quick to always put others first. The family would like to thank Dr. Zimmerman, Stacey, Jane and all the staff at Indian Head Hospital who were so kind to Alice and her family and kept her as comfortable as possible during these last months.
A graveside service will be held in Lebret Catholic Cemetery, Lebret, SK. May 21 2022, at 2 pm. Arrangements entrusted to Conley Funeral Home, Fort Qu’Appelle, SK. 1-306-332-0555.
