Edwin’s Obituary
NICKERSON, Edwin Allen “Bugs” – 72, of Clark’s Harbour, passed away peacefully at his residence on Monday, January 17, 2022. Born on January 17, 1950, he was the son of the late Edwin and Helen (Atwood) Nickerson. Bugs is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Susie; son, Aaron (Tina); daughter, Merla (Chris); granddaughter, Halle; siblings, Ronnie (the late Marion), Paulette (Murray) Townsend; sister-in-law, Janie Nickerson; in-laws, Sharon (the late Sheldon) Stoddard; Tony (Amanda) Rhyno; Todd (the late Bunty) Rhyno; Guilda (Blair) Lloyd, Timmy (Paula) Rhyno; many nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; great-great nieces and nephews; as well as several cousins; and an aunt and an uncle. Besides his parents, Bugs was predeceased by his brother, Clarke; in-laws, Keith, Bud, Dave, and Bill Rhyno. Bugs was Cape Islands most sought after fish splitter; and over the years worked for several fish plants on Cape Island, including, Stoddard Fisheries, GM Newell Ltd, Arthur L Atkinson Ltd, and Old Salt Seafoods. In his earlier years he also went lobstering with his Uncle Edgar and trawling with Murray. He was an avid deer, duck, and rabbit hunter. He loved spending time at the family camp in Upper Clyde. He would often compete with his brothers, Ronnie and Clarke, as well as his Uncle Freddie, over who had seen the biggest buck. Bugs had killed several bucks over the years, but his most prized one, was his 16 pointer, even thought it was the ugliest set of horns you had ever seen. He also had some “discussions” with his sister, Paulette, over who had the best camera, his Minolta or her Pentax. In his eyes, his Minolta was always the winner. Bugs was a huge Yankees fan and he often had some “heated” discussions with Lovitte about the Yankees and the Boston Soxs. In the early years of their marriage, Susie and Bugs liked to go to the Legion dances, as well as talk on the CB set to people all across Canada and the States. Their CB handles were “Whiskey Jack and Miss Mew”. After the kids were grown up they enjoyed camping and taking a few trips South. His favourite trip was to Jamaica. He only went a handful of times because he hated “that kind of heat”. He preferred to “bake” in the comfort of his wood stove, which was usually red hot. Bugs enjoyed trout fishing, looking for deer and watching TV. His favourite shows were, The Big Bang Theory and Matlock. He also enjoyed a nice cold Keith’s on Friday and Saturday nights. Bugs could often be found at Billy Baker’s Garage, Ernie’s Garage, Fisherman’s Haven, and the “Smoke Shack”, telling stories and lying with the guys. He was a true home body and a creature of habit, and had his daily routine. Every morning after breakfast he would head to South Side, then to the Hawk, and then to Ernie’s Garage to yarn with the boys. Then he’d head home for dinner, have a nap, and then head back to the garage. After supper he’d watch TV, then head to bed. Bugs enjoyed all of Susie’s cooking and would brag about it often as he’d pat his belly. He also could cook a mean rabbit stew himself. Bugs’ greatest accomplishments in his life were his family. He loved Susie with all his heart. Aaron was next in line. He was so proud of all his golf accomplishments, which included, two NS Mid-Amateur wins, being on the NS Team 12 times for the Provincials, representing Team NS at the Atlantic Cup six to seven times, Aaron’s 3 hole-in-ones, along with his 10 Club Championships at River Hills and 2 in Pubnico. He was also very very proud of his daughter, Merla, for becoming an RN, and always worried about her travelling back and forth to Yarmouth. He never watched any of her ballgames, but always checked her stats after the games. Recently after she picked up golf, he always made a point to ask how her golf game was coming along and if she was as good as her big brother yet. He also asked if she was going to be the next Sam Snead. But, above all else, was the apple of his eye, his granddaughter, Halle. He was so proud of all her academic and athletic accomplishments, and very happy she chose Dalhousie University to pursue her post studies. He would always “slip her some cash” when she was home on a visit, so she could go and have a “decent meal” with her friends. He loved to spoil her, especially at Christmas, when he made sure she had an extra special gift just from Gramp. Also, when he felt the time was right, he gave her a car. Bugs will be missed by all who knew him. Arrangements are under the care and direction of H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Barrington. There will be no formal visitation or funeral service. Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Rosalin Nickerson Care Fund or any charity of choice.
