GROSS: Ervin E.
March 28, 1940 – September 16, 2022
Ervin was born to Bertha and George Gross of Simpson, SK on March 28, 1940. He was the youngest of 6 children. Ervin’s early education was in Simpson where he attained his Grade 8 education. He began working at a very young age with his first job being at the Watrous Dairy Plant. He also worked at the Watrous Bakery and at the Diefenbaker Dam. In 1962 he received his diploma in Barbering and has been cutting hair ever since.
Ervin’s love for sports has spanned over decades. He played golf, ball, enjoyed hunting, fishing and of course hockey! Ervin was a goalie in an era where there were no facemasks. Ervin was very smart and innovative and after a few years of constant pucks to the face, he designed and created his own fibreglass mask. His love for the Montreal Canadiens was a close second to the love of his life, Carol Preston. They married on Nov. 11, 1961 and began their family shortly after, raising Troy, Geneen, Treena and Gennifer.
Ervin had a very active role in the community. He served on the local council for Watrous and Manitou Beach for over 20 years. He also received the Citizen of the Year in 2005. His other hobbies included gardening and baking.
Family was everything to Ervin. He was never happier than when he had a baby in his arms. Ervin and Carol would travel the countryside to visit Troy and Lisa in BC and to catch all the grandkids sporting events. A houseful of family meant ever-lasting memories. He never hesitated to sit on the floor with the great grandkids to play with their toys or to sit at the table with the grandkids to build a puzzle. His favourite thing to cap off family time was a good old-fashioned wiener roast. He liked his hotdogs well done with lots of mustard and a Bud Light in hand.
Ervin was a pillar of our community and was blessed to form so many close friendships by cutting generations of families’ hair. He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him.
Ervin was predeceased by his siblings Sigfried, Edward, Alfred, Annie McKay and Gladys McDade. He is survived by his wife Carol; children Troy Gross (Lisa), Aidan and Zachary; Geneen Guinan (Gerald), Danielle Taylor (Barrett), great-grandsons George and Oliver; Treena Acton (Kevin), Jensen Lewis (David), Cambrie Lewis (Travis), Andrew Lewis, Stephanie Acton (Jess), Hailey Acton, Shyanne Acton-Kelln (Caitlin) and great-grandsons Hendryx and Lenyx; Gennifer Ediger (Jason), Preston and Audrey.
Ervin passed away at St Paul’s Hospital, Saskatoon, SK on Friday, September 16, 2022.
