Winnifred
Ellen Smith, 89, of Moncton and Riverside-Albert passed away
peacefully onFebruary 15th, 2021 at the Moncton Hospital with her
daughters by her side.
She was born in Hastings, Albert County (Fundy National Park)
on April 22, 1931, the daughter of the late Bernard and Gertrude
(Smith) McKinley.
Winnie graduated from Alma Superior School in 1948 and went
on to graduate from Success Business College in 1949. She worked at
the Marven’s Biscuit Company as a payroll clerk. She then
went to the CNR accounting department, where she was one of the first
women computer operators. Later in life, she and Harold owned and
operated Smith’s Groceries and the Riverside post
office.
Winnie was devoted to her faith and was a member of Holy
Ghost Catholic Church in Riverside-Albert. She was very involved in
her community and could be counted on to help when needed. Always an
activist, she was never afraid to put pen to paper for a cause she
believed in. She was a member of the Home and School, served on the
Board of Forest Dale Home, was a member of the Irish Canadian Culture
Association and NB Genealogical Society.
Winnie was a lifelong learner and among other things took a
keen interested in genealogy. A talented writer, she researched and
wrote the book “Of the Country”; with
her niece Ann Breault. She loved to travel and was
fortunate enough to travel all over the
world.
Winnie came from a large family and joined Harold’s
large family. She was close to her
relatives from many
generations, always taking an interest in their activities,
accomplishments and lives. Her home was the center for many gatherings
where there was lively conversation and lots of laughter. Always
thinking of others, Winnie took time to send a card or make a phone
call to family, friends and neighbours on every occasion. She will be
remembered for her kind and caring ways and for her great smile and
personality.
She will be deeply missed by her much-loved
daughters, Brenda-Lee of Halifax, Angela and Juanita of Moncton, her
sisters-in-law Lucy McKinley (late Donald) of Moncton, Carol Bartol
(John) of Windsor, NS, Alice Smith (late Walter) of Vancouver and
brother-in-law Winston Smith (Eileen) of Ottawa. Her beloved nieces
and nephews who all held a special place in her heart will also miss
her.
Besides her parents she was predeceased by her loving
husband, Harold. As the last member of her immediate family she is
predeceased by her sisters, Annie Leaman, Viola Brantnall, Teresa
Kelly, Gladys McCarron, Stella Quillian, Marie McQuade, Clara
Keirstead and Maisie Martin;and by her brothers, Louis, Elmer and
Donald.
There will be a public visitation at the Albert County
Funeral Home on February 24 from 2:00 to 5:00 pm. Due to COVID-19
there will be a private Funeral Mass at the Holy Ghost Catholic
Church. Interment will be in the Holy Ghost Catholic Cemetery,
Hopewell Hill, NB, in the spring.
For those who wish, donations in memory of Winnie to the Holy
Ghost Cemetery or to the charity of the donor’s choice would be
greatly appreciated.
