William Robert Thompson passed away peacefully on July 31, 2021, at Cowichan Hospice with his wife Colleen and daughter Corrine by his side.
He was predeceased by his 1st wife Kal (Katharine) in 2015. Bill met in Kal 1951 at a dance in Cedar Community Hall and they were married September 1952 and together raised three children. They had a very active married life.
In the early years they played softball and badminton and in the following years took up golf, water skiing, and bridge. They later became duplicate bridge players, attending many Sectional and Regional Bridge tournaments. They both attained the rank of Life Master in bridge and Bill also taught duplicate bridge to others after he retired. Many happy memories raising their family and being together for 62 years.
He is survived by his three children; Corrine Thompson (Tim), David Thompson (Chris), and Chris Carter (Steve); Seven grandchildren; Jim Segee (Ahamida). Brad Segee, Kate Khan (Ahmed), Jonathan Thompson (Amanda), Elyse Thompson (Derek), Liane Schenke (Dan), Alex (Michelle): and Seven great grandchildren; Mariah Segee, David Thompson, Zella Khan, Emirah Khan, Serena Khan, Danica Graham and Karina Graham.
Bill is also survived by his 2nd wife Colleen, who lovingly cared for him during the last phase of his life.
Together they spent time with friends, enjoyed sitting in their patio, which was surrounded by trees and a creek. Bill especially enjoyed listening to the the music of Andre Rieu. He would often share a joke or two with neighbours in his apartment complex while out getting exercise with his walker. He always had a smile to share.
Bill was born in Vancouver, and spent his formative years in Burnaby, attending both Edmonds Street Public School and Burnaby South High School. After schooling he promptly moved to Youbou. He spent the next forty years working in the forest industry, beginning in Nitinat Logging Camp, moving to work at BCFP in Youbou mill in the early 50’s, and he retired in 1985. Bill joined the Masonic Fraternity in 1954, and served as Worshipful Master of Coronation Lodge #151 on two separate occasions and as District Deputy Grand Master of District No. 27 in 1981/82 and was a life member of Temple Lodge #33.
A special thank you to Dr R. Gilbert, to VIHA Palliative Care and to Cowichan Hospice for their kindness and dedication in caring for Bill. He was so happy to be at Cowichan Hospice for the last months of his life.
Special thanks to HW Wallace Cremation and Burial Services in Duncan.
