On Monday, August 16th, 2021, William “Sonny” Alexander Fidler passed away in Edmonton, AB at the age of 59 years. Only a few people knew my brother by his real name William, so I will refer to him as Sonny. Sonny is the name everybody knew him by.
Sonny was born to Stella Durston & Thomas Fidler. Sonny was born a twin, but his twin sister was stillborn. Sonny only weighed a pound and a half at birth, the nurses put him in a shoebox because he was too tiny to put in anything else (this is what mom always told us). When Sonny was born, we were living outside of Prince Albert in the Lily Plain district. Dad tried to make a living as a farmer, but he didn’t have his own equipment, so it didn’t work out like he wanted, so in 1966 he moved us to Prince Albert and Sonny was 4 years old at the time.
Sonny attended Prince Edward School till grade 6, then to Prince Charles for grade 7 & 8 then to Riverside for his grade 9. He never finished his schooling, as, during the summer break between grades 9 & 10, he came to visit me in La Ronge. Sonny ended up staying with me in La Ronge until we moved back to Prince Albert in 1980.
He started driving cab and did this for many, many years. He loved driving and meeting new people. He must have made a lasting impression on many of those people with his great sense of humor because it seemed like everybody knew him. I was always referred to as “Sonny’s sister” or they would say “your Sonny’s sister?” but he was always my baby brother. He also drove a mail truck for a couple of years. This took him to Christopher Lake, Waskesiu, Montreal Lake, Weyakwin, Air Ronge, and finally La Ronge. He did this route every day of the week except weekends & holidays, which just goes to prove how much he enjoyed driving. After doing this for two or more years, he decided that he was going to go to Edmonton to be with our older brother. He loved Edmonton so much that after our brother Bill passed, he took over his apartment and lived there until his passing. Sonny was always a jokester and loved to laugh and have fun. He will be greatly missed by all his friends and family.
Sonny will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Miranda Lafond and her family, his sister Valerie (Don) Robbie, his nephews Darwin Durston and his son Jaxson, George Irving Jr., Michael Durston and his family & Warren Durston, his nieces Shelley Irving-Foster and her son Kane, Jodie Durston & her family, his great-nephews Peter and his son Dion, Jeremy (Sanna Crane) and Shelwin Irving as well as aunts, uncles, and many cousins.
Sonny was predeceased by his parents, Thomas Fidler (2003), Stella Durston (2011), his siblings Emma Durston (2020), Bill Durston (2019), his brother-in-law George Irving Sr. (2006), his nieces Donna Irving (2007) & Beverly Irving (2016).
A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, September 18th, 2021, at 3 PM at MacKenzie Chapel followed by a Celebration of Life Luncheon at Nordale Hall. Condolences can be sent to the family on our website at www.mackenziechapel.ca. Arrangements in care of MacKenzie Chapel & Crematorium – Shellbrook Funeral Home.
