Obituary
On May 31st, 2021, at the age of 87 years young at heart always, Walter James Reid passed away with his daughter Glynis and daughter-in-law Kathy holding his hands. The time had come for him to join his best friend and love of his life, wife Asa and also his beloved and cherished son Darwin, as well as many loved ones of family and friends.
With the heart of a lion, Wally lived a full and active life. He was always hard working to be able to provide for his family. His passions for hunting and fishing and gardening were just a few ways he loved to be that family provider and teacher – as he was taught when he grew up. He shared these life skills most especially with his son and nephews to be passed on for generations to come.
His skills were many; learned by serving in the Royal Canadian Navy, being a semi-truck driver, working for Manitoba Pool, operating heavy equipment, ice fisherman, meat cutter, training Labrador Retrievers for hunting, being a farmhand for years, and even until he was 80 helped tend horses at a local ranch. His knowledge was vast and extensive and he loved to share what he knew.
Always known by his entire family for loving to tease and tell a joke, his cheeky sense of humor was obvious to all; including most recently towards his wonderful caregivers at Douglas Campbell Lodge.
Dad embraced the simple joys and beauty of life including with a soft and gentle nature shared only with those closest to his heart. Most of all, he loved spending time with family and friends who came to visit. Wally enjoyed playing Liniment League slopitch, shooting pool at the Legion, curling, camping, and most especially dancing. Whether it was a waltz or the jig, there were many memories of these being spent in either Riverton, MB with the Johnson families and friends or at the local halls in MacDonald or Westbourne MB with the neighbors so he could kick up his heels and have fun.
Left to cherish Walter’s memory are; his daughter Glynis (Calgary AB), with his grandchildren Megan (Penticton BC), and John (Vernon BC); daughter-in-law Kathryn (Westbourne MB), with his grandchildren Devin and Tristan; his sisters Marguerite (Bill) and Shirley; his brother Delbert (Louise); his brother-in-law Danny; and many cherished nieces and nephews from both the Reid and Johnson families.
“Dad… take the backroad for your truck ride Home. It really is the best way and every mile is a memory. Until then, save a dance for me…Love your Baby Girl “
