Obituary
Viola Helen Karton
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother Viola Helen Karton.
She passed peacefully away in her sleep the morning of March 13,2021 at the age of 95 years.
Mom was born June 10, 1925 in Bratton, Saskatchewan to parents Alvin and Gellen Sjovold.
She was baptized into the Lutheran Church July 19, 1925. Her early years were spent growing up at Macrorie, Saskatchewan along with her parents and sisters Juanita, Irene, and Esther. In 1937 when she was 12 years old, her family moved to Erickson Manitoba, where they farmed in the Westmount area and Mom and her sisters attended Westmount School.
Some of Mom’s fondest memories were the two years she spent in British Columbia in 1944/45. She worked as a waitress in the Vancouver area, and spent time with Juanita and her cousins that lived out there. In 1945 she returned to Erickson to help her parents on the family farm.
A few years later, while working for a neighbour, she met Charlie who turned out to be the love of her life. On November 24, 1951 they were married and moved to Makinak, Manitoba where Dad was a Pool Elevator manager. In 1953, their first son Alvin was born, and in 1954 their second son Murray was born.
Mom was very active in the community where she volunteered for various community and school events . She was also involved with the United Church where she was a member and then president of the United Church Women’s Society.
Her passion was curling and you would find her travelling around the area playing in as many bonspiels as she could. She was a member and served as president of the Ladies Curling Club in Makinak.
She loved fishing and camping.
In 2008 Mom moved into the Gendreau Personal Care home where she received wonderful care until her passing.
Viola was predeceased by her husband Charles Karton, parents Alvin and Gellen Sjovold, sister and brother-in-law Juanita and Willard Anderson, sister and brother-in-law Irene and Lloyd Lee, brother-in-law Gordon Reid.
She will be sadly missed by her sons and their families, Alvin and Bernice Karton, Murray and Val Karton and sister Esther Reid, as well as grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many close friends.
