Vera Kennedy
Vera Kennedy, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, passed away on Thursday, January 21, 2021, at the Grande Prairie Care Centre, at the age of 93 years.
Vera was born on November 28, 1927, in Edmonton, AB, and was raised on a farm with her six siblings in Spirit River, AB, by her parents Sarah and Howard Pegg. Vera went on to marry the love of her life Robert “Bob” Kennedy, in 1948. Together they had three children, Patricia, Douglas and Donald, and resided in the communities of High Prairie, Peace River, and eventually settling into their final home in Grande Prairie. It is in these years that Vera was employed as a bookkeeper for Canadian Propane and then Rentco Equipment until her retirement.
Vera and Bob were very active in the Grande Prairie Royal Canadian Legion Branch #54, with Vera serving as president and District Commander for the Ladies Auxiliary. It is through the Legion that Vera volunteered countless hours and found a strong sense of community.
She was always recognized for looking good, dressing sharp, and having good taste. Her home was always polished and smelled of potpourri; it was warm and inviting; her cooking and baking always done and presented to perfection. She had a strong value that families lived within their means, which meant that often, the treat of the week was the family would go for a drive to spend time together and “when there was enough money to get an ice cream, you did, and when there wasn’t, you went for a drive, and that was good enough”.
Vera will be sadly missed by her son Doug (Connie) and their children: Annette, David, Kevin and Kelly; son in-law Wes Bach; daughter in-law Bonnie Kennedy and her children: Carolyn, Christopher, Catherine, and Ian; as well as her 15 great-grandchildren and 2 great great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband Bob in 2006; Daughter Patricia in 2017; Son Donald in 2004; and by three of her brothers.
The family would like to extend a huge thank you to the staff of Emerson Court at the Grande Prairie Care Centre for their kindness and care provided to Vera over the last few years of her life.
Due to COVID-19, an invitation-only Celebration of Life will be held for Vera at Oliver’s Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 2, 2021, at 2:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to Diabetes Canada – Calgary (#220, 6223 2 St. SE, Calgary, AB, T2H 1J5), or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta (#144, 5241 Calgary Trail NW, Edmonton, AB, T6H 5G8).
