Thomas Purcell MacIntosh
Sydney Mines – We regret to announce the passing of Thomas MacIntosh, 77, on Friday, November 12, 2021, at An Cala Palliative Care, Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Florence on August 28, 1944, he was the youngest of 17 children of Hugh and Catherine (Dickson) MacIntosh.
In his early years, Tommy sailed on the Great Lakes. In later years, he was employed in various labouring positions as well as bartending at the Florence Legion. Tommy was a lifelong member of Wilson United Church in Florence. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 83 in Florence for 46 years. Tommy was an ardent fan of the Boston Bruins and the Toronto Blue Jays. Tommy’s love of sports was most evident during the heydays of the Florence Coal Dusters fastball team.
He followed the boys through thick and thin and during any post game debates always had their backs.
Tommy is survived by his sister Ruby Squarey, Sydney Mines, sisters-in-law Rose MacIntosh, Oakville, ON, and Sheila MacIntosh, Burton, NB, brothers-in-law Ches ton, Sydney Mines, and Ralph King, Bras d’Or, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Tommy was predeceased by sisters Olga, Lois, Margaret, Christina, Rodney, Althea and MaeAudrey, and brothers Hugh Jr., Everett, Alvin, Robert, Melrose, John, Daniel and Donald.
Tommy resided at the Miner’s Manor in Sydney Mines for the past 13 years. The family would like to express our gratitude for the kindness and compassion of Tommy’s dear friend Muriel MacKinnon during these years. We are forever grateful. We also appreciate the many visits of his nephew, Grant ton, especially during the challenging Covid restrictions.
We would also like to express our thanks to the administration and staff at Miner’s Manor, as well as the staff at An Cala Palliative Care during Tommy’s last days.
At Tommy’s request, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held on Friday, November 19, 2021, at 2 pm, in Brookside Cemetery, Sydney Mines, with Rev. Nick Phillips officiating. Covid 19 restrictions will apply at the service. Donations in Tommy’s memory may be made to Miner’s Manor, 15 Lorne St., Sydney Mines, NS. B1V 3B9.
