Obituary of Steven John Roschuk
Passed away on February 3rd at the Welland Hospital in his 90th year. Beloved husband of Margaret (née Walker). Dear father of John of Wake Forest, North Carolina and Janet of Oakville. Loving grandfather to Stephen, Morgan, Griffin and James. Predeceased by his brother Walter. Steve grew up in Crowland, now Welland. He was the son of Ukraine and Polish immigrants John and Ana Roschuk. Steve was an excellent student and star athlete, playing varsity football, baseball and basketball. He played second base for Welland’s 3 – time Ontario Provincial Championship team – 1945 Bantam, 1947 Midget and 1949 Juvenile. Steve attended University of Toronto earning his chemical engineering degree and then went on to the University of Buffalo earning his MBA and then to Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration. His career began in the Oil Industry with British American Oil in Calgary. Wanting to return to the Niagara Peninsula, Steve accepted a position with Norton Company in Chippawa. He later joined Union Carbide and rose up the ranks to become V.P. and General Manager of Carbon Products Division, the very plant his father John Roschuk worked in as a labourer. Steve took up golf in his 20’s and excelled at it. He and his wife Margaret were a formidable team at the husband and wife tournaments in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. Bored with retirement after a year, Steve became a licensed financial planner and worked part-time for 20 years helping manage his friend’s retirement plans. He was very successful and made a lot of money for people with his shrewd investments and tax planning.
