Obituary
Shirley Anne Ottosen
July 23, 1949 – March 5, 2021
On March 5, 2021, Shirley Ottosen of Fort Assiniboine passed away at the age of 71.
Shirley is survived by two sons and one daughter: Kell Ottosen of Westlock, Brendan (Jennifer) Ottosen of Calgary, and Erin Ottosen of Edmonton; four grandchildren: Jaymee Ottosen, Alexander Ottosen, Arianna Ottosen, and Eddie Ottosen; two brothers: Fred Rein of Athabasca, Glenn (Vera) Rein of Athabasca; and one sister: Faye Desranleau of Perryvale.
Shirley will also be remembered by the friends she walked, curled, and rode horses with; the teachers and teacher aids she worked with; and the students she taught at schools in various communities including Smith, Rochester, Athabasca, Swan Hills, and Barrhead.
Shirley was predeceased by her sister, Linda Lupiezowiec; her sister-in-law, Gloria Rein; and her parents, Fred and Violet Rein.
Born in Athabasca, Shirley grew up on the Rein family farm at Perryvale. She loved animals, nature, and gardening, and she believed in preserving local history. She volunteered for the Fort Assiniboine Museum, the Klondike Trail Society, and the committee that created Rolling Hills and Whispering Pines, a history book of Rochester, Perryvale, and the surrounding area.
We will remember Shirley for her incredible work ethic; her beautiful yard and garden; and her gentle treatment of the horses she rode, the kids she taught, and the plants she grew. She was kind, generous, and modest to a fault. We did not expect her to leave us so soon, and we will always miss her.
We will celebrate Shirley’s life at a later date.
