Obituary of Sally Ladouceur
Passed away peacefully, while surrounded by loved ones at her home of Portal Village in Port Colborne on Sunday October 10, 2021. She died of natural causes in her 96th year.
Born Marie Ann Marcelle St Jean on August 16 1926, she was known as Sally for the vast majority of her life which she spent in Port Colborne. Her father was married to Eve St Jean and their marriage resulted in brothers Ivan, Leo as well as Sally. Sally’s father died before she was born. Eve St Jean, her mother, then married Ernest Bilodeau. That marriage brought Sally brothers Joe and John and finally sister Rochelle.
Sally attended Mackay School and then Port Colborne High School. She quit school on her sixteenth birthday and almost immediately got a job working for the Canadian Government during WWII. She became a highly skilled executive secretary and stenographer. Her typing and shorthand skills were prodigious. She had an opportunity to work in Paris after the war but chose to stay close to home.
Shortly after the war, she met and then married Marc Ladouceur in 1947. Their marriage lasted until Marc’s passing in 2009. Sally took time from work to start a family. They had children Mark (b.1952), Peter (b.1955), Marcia (b.1957) and David (b.1959). They lived on Charlotte Street, then Steele Street and then Catherine Street. Sally and Marc built a home at 305 Knoll Street in Port Colborne. She raised her family there from 1961 until 2007 when she moved to Portal Village, her final home. She was also a dedicated parishioner at St John Bosco Church.
Sally worked at Medical Associates in Port Colborne from 1964 until her retirement in 1985. At this busy Medical Clinic she worked in Customer Service and Accounting. She was also an artist who produced over 100 oil paintings. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels and Elections Canada. She loved golf, travelling, walking, reading and of course pets. She was an excellent cook and hostess. Sally and Marcia loved hosting the annual family gathering on Boxing Day at 305 Knoll Street for over twenty years.
Although she smoked since her teenage years, she quit ‘cold turkey’ on her 50th birthday never to return.
Sally showed profound courage in coping with the untimely death of daughter Marcia in 2017. Sally was 91 years old old at the time and Marcia was her primary caregiver.
Sally was always a devoted wife and mother. She was totally selfless in caring for husband Marc during his declining years while at home and when he was at Northland Point Long Term Care. She supported several charities during her long life.
She had a very dry sense of humour and a biting wit. The staff at Portal Village know this well. This was her way of showing affection. Underneath the barbs was a kind and caring heart. Those she liked the best got the worst digs.
In addition to her sons Sally is survived by grandchildren Amy, Sarah, Matthew and Justin. She was also blessed with a great granddaughter, Hazel born in 2017. She also has many surviving relatives in the Bilodeau, St John and Ladouceur families.
Her passing was not unexpected, but painful nonetheless. She lived a long and full life. We will always remember her and hold her dear in our hearts.

In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the ARMSTRONG FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 179 Clarence Street, Port Colborne. The Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, October at St. John Bosco Catholic Church, 375 Main St. West, Port Colborne with Father Peter Walton as celebrant. Rite of Committal following at Mount St. Joseph Cemetery, Port Colborne. Due to COVID restrictions, attendance will be monitored for capacity, gathering limits will be enforced and facemasks are required for the service.
