In Memory of Rubina Nettie Nickel
1932-2021
Nickel, Rubina Nettie – It is with great sorrow to announce the passing of our mom, grandmother, and great grandmother on Tuesday, February 2nd, at Heidehof in St. Catharines in her 89th year. Predeceased by her husband, Henry (2009).
Born in Hepburn, July 4th, 1932 to John and Tina Isaac. Left to celebrate her memories are, children, Carl (Chris), NOTL, Nancy (Brian) Smith, St. Catharines, and Glenn (Nok), Thailand. Grandchildren, Scott (Michele), Missy (John), Darryl (Renee), Dale (Melissa), Todd (Shandi), Lindsay (Jeff), and Luke. Great grandkids, Brandon, Tyler, Allie, Shelby, Carson, Tristan, Nathan, Nevaeh, Kiana, Bentley, Hailey, Paxton, Beckham, Ava, and Covy. Predeceased by her parents, her sister, Leona Hahn, and survived by two other sisters, Elizabeth Peters and Ethel Ewert.
During the depression in 1941, the family moved from Saskatchewan to St. Catharines, and then to Virgil in hopes of a better life. She met and then married Henry Nickel in 1952. They started their lives in a new home they built in Virgil. They enjoyed travelling around the U.S. and Canada. After 24 years, they moved towards the Kitchener area into different homes and occupations. Mom was lonely and missed her family. She cherished the visits that her kids and grandkids often made to see them. She had a few hobbies that kept her busy. They eventually moved back to the St. Catharines area and settled into Tabor Manor apartments. After 15 years, dad’s health failed and he passed away. Her children tried to fill the void by taking her on a few vacations south.
In 2020, her health was failing and so she moved into Heidehof long term care where she lived for 10 months until her passing from complications of Covid.
Thank you to the amazing PSW’s at Tabor Supportive Housing who loved her so much by making her laugh every day. She loved them back. Also, a heartfelt thank you to the nurses, caregivers, and Liz at Heidehof who took such great care of her.
Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Her Life will occur at a later date.
If desired, memorial donations can be made to Heidehof Home for the Aged, 600 Lake St., St. Catharines.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Rubina
