Obituary for
Rose Porkolab (Parker)
PORKOLAB, Rose Annette (nee Parker) October 20, 1935 – June 13, 2021 – passed away on June 13, 2021 at the Welland Hospital in her 86th year. She was predeceased by her husband Louis (1991). Sadly missed by her daughter Margaret Sonnenberg (nee Porkolab). Lovingly remembered by her grandchildren Marshal “Joey” Sonnenberg (Kitty), Estelle Sonnenberg (Kyle) and David Sonnenberg. Loving sister of Geraldine “Jerry” Crease (Floyd), Victoria “Vickie” McCaully (Robert) and Marjorie “Teena” Parker (late David). She will be missed by her many much loved nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins and friends. Predeceased by her parents Loyd and Elaine (nee Johnson) Parker, sisters Rosette Parker, Marion (Nick Misdorp) and brothers Patrick Parker (Ella-Mae), Ralph Parker (Gladys) and Kenneth Parker (Lori). Rose was born in the Pelham Township and lived along the Welland River most of her life. She loved the farm life; she felt very close to her maker, by working and caring for all of God’s creations. She had a great love for her farm and everything related to farming. From her caring and healing animals to her green thumb for her many house plants, gardening and history/geography. She was very involved in market gardening for many years and enjoyed everything from hoeing in the gardens to custom farm work, helping others with haying and fall harvest. She did everything from driving the thrashing machine to hay baling, buying her first baler in 1942. During the 1950’s, she did custom baling of hay and straw and the thrashing machine of crops for local farmers within a 40 mile radius until her daughter was born. She was well known across Ontario due to the family farm, which provided fresh fruits, vegetables and bedding plants to local stores, canneries, in addition to the farmers markets, where over the years, she made many friends from the Niagara Region and across Ontario. Rosie and her husband Louie expanded by building a greenhouse in 1973 and called it the Rose City Greenhouse that closed in 1991 when her husband died. Rose’s farm was a happy place and her home was always open to welcome children to stay while their parents recovered from illness or were going through a difficult time. In total, there were 45 children throughout the years up until 2008. In 1969 she started Rose City Riding Club, which she ran for many years with the help of her daughter, to provide a place for children to ride horses and ponies and a place to stay. In 2011, the farm was sold and Rose moved to Welland. During 1986 – 2001, Rose had worked as a Home Healthcare Worker, which brought her great joy helping people and their families. Rose was full of life and enjoyed every minute; she often went dancing with Louie to many local barn dances in Wainfleet and community halls around the Niagara area. They enjoyed the Niagara Falls Jamborees for many years, concerts to see Minnie Pearl, Johnny Cash, Roy Rogers, Dale Evans and Gordie Tapp and followed the band Gord Stevens and the Starlighters. Rose was a great mom. With everything Rose did, her greatest pride and joy were her grandchildren and she was always there to love and support them. She often talked about missing her siblings, nieces and nephews, recounting the great times she had with them. Rose loved them no matter where they ventured.
